D Colorful Chinese Restaurant (家乐福) @ Elit Avenue, Bayan Baru, Penang.

A restaurant dedicated to serve family-friendly Chinese menu, D Colorful Chinese Restaurant is another new member that joins the clamoring crowd at Elit Avenue. The restaurant has got no outstanding decor nor eye-catchy signage but like a simple, intimate Chinese restaurant in the neighborhood. They have a long list to offer, covering many Chinese stir-fry dishes. Prices are standard-average but the seating is comfortable and spacious, there is even a partitioned room for those that come in a big group.

For something comforting, we had their signature steaming hot Claypot Seafood Porridge/ 龙皇海鲜砂煲粥 (Rm 38.80/ serves 2 pax) that comes with loads of ocean wholesomeness- Soft Shell Crabs and Prawns. The porridge possessed a silky smooth texture with indelible seafood sweetness of the crustacean. The Soft Shell Crabs were slightly hard on the texture while the Prawns scored in terms of freshness but both of them were important contributors of flavors in this dish. Not too shabby for the portion and taste.

Ramen in Pork Broth/ 猪骨生奶汤拉面 (Rm 15.80) was disappointingly average, we expected the broth to be creamier, milky and probably smoother but it possessed a peculiar porky after-taste which I am not quite fond of. The overall taste did not shine... not even the texture of the noodles. The only thing that we approved was the Egg... nicely cooked with running Yolk in the middle but too bad it was not braised.

It excites me like a child when I first knew that D Colorful serves Sze Chuan Stewed Beef/ 四川麻辣牛肉 (Rm 18.80) and I just could not resist the temptation but to order one. The craving resulted in a disappointment. The Beef was expertly marinated and carefully cooked to the right texture while the sauce possessed a balanced medley of spiciness and salinity but it lacked of an important element... the soul of the dish- Sze Chuan Peppercorn. It lacked of the "ma" (麻) component and thus, spoilt the overall taste of the dish. It would be perfect otherwise.
