Famous Fish Head Curry @ Guang Long Coffee Shop (光隆), Juru, Bukit Mertajam, Penang.

If you are looking for something different than the usual Nasi Kandar's Curry or the ubiquitous Fish head Curry available in most Zhu Char stalls, check out this famous Fish Head Curry stall hidden far deep in the light industry area of Juru, Bukit Mertajam. It may be a little tricky to find the place as it looks exactly like a coffee shop in the neighborhood; from Juru Autocity, turn towards the light industry direction and drive till you see the first traffic light... turn left and go straight. Keep driving until you passed a bridge; you should be able to find Guang Long Coffee Shop on the right shortly.

Using fresh Fish Head served in thick, rich Red Curry Sauce; the dish is also served with a variation of Seafood (Prawns and Squid) and crunchy greens (Okra, Aubergines and Onions) as well as Tofu. The dish is served using a huge metal container. We had ours for Rm 80 (for 3 diners), unlike the usual watery Curry sauce, theirs was thick with a hint of acidity. The flavor was multi-dimensional with a remarkable depth of flavors, probably thanks to the heaps of Seafood added which introduced another layer of seafood-sweetness to the Curry. Everything was fresh, the pristine white flesh was firm and nary a hint of fishiness. Equally praise-worthy was the perfectly cooked plump and bursty Prawns, a rice-company-worthy dish that packs many tasty delights in one!

A short walk from Guang Long Coffee House is V-yaj's Cendol; a simple and humble set up by the road side. We had their Cendol Special (Rm 2.60)- Corn Kernels, Jelly, Glutinous Rice topped with shaved Ice and Cendol Jelly with Coconut Cream, drizzled over Gula Melaka. The concoction was refreshing, the Coconut Cream did its best here by providing a creamy, milky flavor but we thought the Cendol Jelly could be smoother and chewier. The Gula Melaka enhanced instead of overshadowed the Coconut Cream with a sleek fruity sweet caramel molasses. One of the best solutions to the sultry hot hazy weather.
