Salon Du Chocolat @ Gurney Paragon Mall, Penang.

Many chocolate lovers' wish is finally answered with the new opening of Salon Du Chocolat at the iconic Festive Square (Ground Floor) of Gurney Paragon Mall. The Hong Kong-based brand is not new for those in the know; Salon Du Chocolat is well-known for serving premium and fine Chocolate desserts as well as their home-made Pralines and Chocolate bites. The place has a minimal yet elegant interior decor- comfortable and snug. Step in the cafe and your attention will likely be drawn away by the three Chocolate fountain right next to the main entrance where one gets to witness the silky smooth, creamy and glistening Chocolate. The sizable menu has many desserts covered but they share one common appearance- heavily slathered by Chocolate syrup. It can be quite glutted for one to finish a chocolate dessert entirely on his/her own so it is advisable to visit the place in a group... for sharing the guilt; it is not the place that you want to have your regular meal fixed but a great place for a cocoa-rific experience to sate your cravings.

We wanted something fruity and so we had Pizza Waffle (Rm 20.90), quarter sliced-thick Waffle heavily smeared with Cream Cheese and jeweled with Pineapple, Kiwi and Strawberries. No, not Belgium Waffle but the ordinary Waffle instead. It was carefully done- with a slight crisp on the edges but eat it fast lest it turns into a piece of sad and soggy pastry. We opted for Dark Chocolate (Milk Chocolate was the other choice, White Chocolate was not available on our visit)- creamy, rich and unexpectedly sweet. It was not cloyingly sweet but we certainly did not expect that level of sweetness in Dark Chocolate and no, no bitter aftertaste. We would also prefer some Almond flakes on the Cream Cheese, for a nuttier and not-so-monotonous-bite.

Another more filling option- Salon Cinnamon (Rm 22.90); Banana or Apple (not available on our visit) with Cream Cheese and Cinnamon, encased in the freshly done Crepe. The substantial serving could easily feed 2-3 person. The Crepe was nicely done- neither too thin nor too thick, just at the right thickness to complement the rich Dark Chocolate shot. Cream Cheese was great either, it defies the usual serving of Cream Cheese. We could not discern the cheesy flavor but rather, a smooth, comfortable and creamy concoction that blends well with the Banana and Chocolate. However, the dessert may seem as a misnomer as there was nary a taste of Cinnamon... almost absent; more like wrapped in a usual piece of Crepe.
