**The Big Fat Hen has since ceased its operations.**
Garden Inn (opposite to Methodist Girl School and KDU College Penang) welcomes a new cafe at the hotel lobby, The Big Fat Hen has three branches in the heartland of Georgetown; Garden Inn at Anson Road, G-Inn at Macalister Road and Chime Heritage (opening at the end of September). Interestingly, all three branches serve different menus- it is recommended that you visit G-Inn's for breakfast, Garden Inn's for light lunch and dinner at their dining house at Chime Heritage. For the business hours, kindly refer to their Facebook Page for more information. We visited their branch at Garden Inn, the place has the perfect setting and ambiance for friends to catch up; though seats are pretty limited. The menu is not too extensive either, but more than sufficient for a light lunch or casual meet ups with friends.
Basil Pesto and Egg Mayo Sandwich (Rm 10) was a recommendation by the hospitable staff. The portion is so big that this on its own would make an awesome light lunch. The Focaccia was lightly buttered but it was somewhat too dry to my liking; the filling, on the other hand, was toothsome. Egg Mayo with a blob of Basil Pesto atop of healthy greens (Cucumber, Tomato and Lettuce). The side was confusing though, a small serving portion of Tapioca Chips; the combo did not work as expected but the Focaccia Sandwich was decent and worth the value.
We figured out why Baileys Chocolate Cake is priced at a whopping price of Rm 16; the flavor of the Irish liqueur was somewhat strong while the thick layer of Chocolate and Cream Cheese contributed a moist, soft and creamy texture to the cake. It was not sweet at all, with a hint of saltiness (from the Cream Cheese frosting I presume) and bitter after-taste. A perfect cake to go with a cup of Joe.
It was not a wise decision to order their Apple Pie with Vanilla Ice Cream (Rm 12). The pastry skin of the Pie was crumbly, thick, not buttery and hard to the bite. The filling, on the other hand, was okay with a unique touch of Cinnamon but my friends thought the filling was too sweet for them; even sweeter to go with the Vanilla Ice Cream and we could not even finish the entire dessert.
Green Tea Latte (Rm 11)
Cappuccino (Rm 9)
