Chin Chai Chiak @ Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling, Georgetown, Penang.

*This place has since ceased its business operation.*

Explosion of cafes opening up in Penang recently and Chin Chai Chiak is definitely one of the unique ones. Going on a different path than most cafes do, Chin Chai Chiak proffers local eats instead of Western menu. Some of the examples are Hainanese Chicken Chop, Assam Laksa, savory Pies, Kaya-Butter Toast just to name a few, and of course, with a few types of home-made Cakes. The snug quaint little cafe seats up to 12 person only which might not be too accommodating for larger groups. One thing that irks me was the staff insists on having 4 diners for a larger table, even though the cafe appears to be rather empty. Also, I thought the serving staff could be friendlier. Not a bad place if you are in the vicinity and I do hope that they are able to learn about the importance of customer service and improve over time. Chin Chai Chiak can be found at a stone's throw distance away from the mural paint along Armenian Street, facing The Boutique Residence.

Not being a fan of Coffee, I thought their Tiramisu (Rm 12) was slightly overpowering for me, however, it will be perfect for Coffee lovers. The layers of Sponge Cake was fully soaked with Coffee and while we cut the cake through, the Coffee started to oozes out. This explains how "intense" the flavor could be. It was soft and definitely moist, best part of all, it carries the bitter-after taste of Coffee; beautifully complemented by the velvety smooth and buttery tender Mascarpone Cheese. A pretty good Tiramisu with their own personal touch.

Their home-made Oreo Cheese Cake (Rm 8) was good either, though not good enough to "wow" me but I am not complaining for that price. It has 3 different layers- Oreo Cookie as the base, Fruit Jelly on top, sandwiching the middle layer of Cheese Cake. It was precisely calibrated both in terms of texture and flavors. The Cookie base provides a hard biscuit bite while the Cheese was soft and Cheesy, further heightened with the resilient sweet-sour Jelly. It carries a rather mild sweetness and will be just perfect for your afternoon tea.
