Granny's Cottage (外婆家) @ Gurney Plaza, Penang.

Granny's Cottage (外婆家) is one of the latest members to the Food & Beverage outlets at Gurney Plaza. It is a place where you will see many "friendly" and "familiar" dishes being offered, the no-frills menu was extensive but most of the dishes will be perfect spooned over rice, in other words, similar concept to Zhu Char, just that it opens in a mall. Prices are certainly considered wallet-friendly and reasonable at Gurney Plaza. Granny's Cottage took the prominent location where BlackBall was previously located, at level 6.

Need not to order rice dishes here at Granny's Cottage. You may go for their Noodles too if you wish, however, it should be noted that their choices for noodles are very limited. I had their Fish Bee Hoon Soup (Rm 10.90) in which a choice of Deep Fried Fish or Fresh Fish slices can be chosen and I had the latter one. I was satisfied with the quality of the Fish, thickly sliced and fresh. The soup, however, was oily and possessed a very strong aroma of Sesame Oil as well as discernible Pepper flavor, until the extent that it was overpowering. I did experience a thirst right after the meal.... MSG (Monosodium Glutamate)? Not my type of Fish Bee Hoon Soup unfortunately.

WPJ Fried Noodles (Rm 8.90) can be a decent choice for both lunch or dinner. The dish was served with an alluring aroma, delicately seasoned and adequately stir fried. My only gripe was the dish was a little too oily to my liking, also, I would prefer it to be served with some chili paste for the extra kick. Not too bad but it was not a mind-blowing dish.

We had an extra order of Steamed Three Combo Egg (Rm 6.90). The presentation was not convincing, the Egg was obviously overcooked but a relief after a mouth. The flavor was well-balanced; not too salty albeit with the addition of Salted Egg and the slight resilient Century Egg added a bite to the texture. Not too bad but only if they could improve on the texture of the egg.....

Their Ai Yu Jelly Ice (Rm 3.90) is definitely the perfect remedy for this blistering heat.
