Home Cafe @ Alora Hotel, Bukit Jambul, Penang.

Folks staying at Parit Buntar should not be new to the name- Home Cafe... a cafe setup by a retired air-stewardess. The cafe has been receiving positive responses from netizens and now, it has finally opened a branch in Penang. Housed in Alora Hotel, the cafe occupies a prominent corner lot of the building. Push the door open and you will notice that there's a kid's corner with toys on the left... move further and you will see the modern cafe setting with a touch of industrial vibe. The cafe is pretty spacious and the ordering system is well-organized. On the menu, it has a lot to offer... ranging from local delights to Western-Oriental dishes or Thai-influenced snacks/ desserts. The prices however, are pretty high considering the common, ubiquitous dishes; a simple family meal here may put a dent on your wallet.

Nasi Lemak with Petai Sambal (Rm 16.90)

Oriental Chicken Chop (Rm 16.90)

Takoyaki (Rm 14.90)

Tub Tim Krob (Rm 9.90)

Save for the Nasi Lemak, the other dishes were less-impressive. The Sambal Petai was deftly cooked with a remarkable dept of flavors, the Petai remained crunchy; the spicy heat gradually kicked in. Though the combination was pretty standard, it never fails to please any Malaysian.

The Oriental Chicken Chop was nothing out of the ordinary except that it was a piece of Fried Chicken topped with sweet sauce. Takoyaki was equally disappointing, we were shocked to find out that 6 pieces of Takoyaki cost a whopping Rm 14.90 (before service charge); the texture was not something close to it (you would have realized that if you are observant enough). The Takoyaki was probably deep fried instead of slowly grilling over the Takoyaki Pan. Lastly, the Tub Tim Krob was not too bad but it could be creamier, the addition of ice diluted the cream factor of the Coconut Milk. Not too shabby but I'd think twice having it again for that price.
