Mamthai Seafood (满泰式海鲜) @ Simpang Amat, Penang.

Operating for more than 15 years, Mamthai is known to serve some of the best authentic Thai food in the neighborhood. The exterior of the place might not be too appealing to some (no fancy, persuasive signage, not fully air-conditioned and the seating arrangement is not impressive at all) but regular patrons just know when and how to make their way back there. The non-elaborate menu can be found on the wall but with limited information (not even the prices); speak to the servers and they will be glad to suggest or recommend the signature dishes. While we did not think their food was mind-blowingly good, the prices were unexpectedly affordable. Not too shabby for a casual family meal.

Seafood Tom Yum (Rm 18/ small)

Thai-styled Steamed Clams (Rm 7/ small)

Thai Mango Salad (Rm 6)

We had the option to choose between Red Tom Yum or White Tom Yum; we picked the earlier choice. The Tom Yum did not taste like the usual ones we had, it possessed a strong acidity with a subtle spiciness that kicked in after a while. It was fine to spoon over rice but it might be a little too strong on its own. The Thai-styled steamed Clams was a disappointment. The Chef did not manage to clean the shellfish thoroughly- some of them contained sands which... spoiled the entire dish. The Thai Mango Salad on the other hand, was tasty. The perfectly ripened Mango has the addictive crunch, the seasoning was spot on, giving the dish a balanced medley of sweet, sour and spicy notes. The slightly chewy Dried Shrimps were there bring the dish to a different level by introducing a sleek saltiness from the ocean and an enjoyable chewy texture. The total damage for 2 diners was merely less than Rm 40 (we thought the dishes were competitively priced).
