Sea Brew Restaurant. Bar. Coffee @ Gurney Drive, Penang.

It's uncommon for Gurney Drive to have new restaurants, the seafront promenade already has a spate of well-established cafes and restaurants. Sea Brew is a rare occasion; previously a hawker place and now turned into a cozy Cafe-Bar space. The facade is inviting, with wide and bright entrance; Sea Brew comes across as a cafe due to its setting but amazingly, the bewilder menu comprises of Steamboat Hot Pot, Western Cuisine and some home-made sweet treats, with options of alcoholic beverages (big menu but not all were available on our visit). But a meal here costs a bomb, expect to pay at least Rm 30 for a main course; while we did enjoy the relaxed atmosphere with soothing sea breeze, we thought the food quality did not quite well-justify the hefty price tags.

Garden Cheese (Rm 15)

Aglio Olio Seafood (Rm 32)

The Salmon (Rm 35)

Steamboat options (steaming Hot Pot, not the usual Hot Pot) are available from Rm 88 (for 2), we did not feel like having that on a sultry hot afternoon so naturally we turned to their Western options. The Aglio Olio Seafood comes with a good number of Seafood- Squid, Clams, Mussels, Prawns and Scallops but unfortunately, all of them were overcooked. We were underwhelmed with the overcooked, slouchy Spaghetti seemingly drenched in Chili Oil. Equally disappointing was "The Salmon" with a small piece of pan-fried Salmon served atop of boiled Potatoes and Asparagus. The fish was overcooked, slightly over-seasoned and overly greasy to our liking. It was most discouraging to see such measly portion.

To our surprise, the dessert- Garden Cheese out-shined the former 2 dishes. It was basically Chocolate Cheese Tart (with cake-like texture of crust) topped with Chocolate Brownies, candied Walnuts and some fresh Blueberries. We liked the Chocolaty of this cake but probably a little too bold that we thought the Cheese-element of the cake did not stand out. But the sweetness was well-balanced and did make a contenting after-meal sweet treat to end the meal.

  1. Don't mind paying more for quality, value for money. No point paying less for something not all that nice.
