Jaloux @ King Street, Georgetown, Penang.

Cozy in the Rocket was once known as one of the best places to get good Pasta in Penang but it was closed for redirection few months ago. The guys behind the now defunct Cozy in the Rocket has relocated and opened a new cafe in the Georgetown heritage zone and is now known as Jaloux. Few doors away from Disted Student Hostel (on the same street) is an old-fashioned concrete house but behind the timeworn wooden door is a clean, cozy and inviting space furnished with wooden tables and chairs. The guys behind Cozy in the Rocket brought the much-lauded menu here, offering the familiar Pasta dishes with a touch of European flair. Price points are above average but the quality is set to please.

Pasta ai Funghi (Rm 33)

Pain de Champagne (Rm 12)

We started off light with Pain de Champagne- toasted French buttered Country Bread served with home-made Cane Caramel. Joke you not, this could be one of the best Toasts I've ever had! The bread was expertly toasted- crisp edges with addictive-soft side; the home-made Cane Caramel added a soothing sweet kick. The combination was haven-matched and the flavors were beyond words.

The Pasta dishes here are famous for a reason- the guys know their Pasta well and take the details in a serious manner. The Tagliatelle was expertly cooked to the right al-dente texture, though some would find it a little overly al-dente; the dish was served with a generous serving of stir fried Mushrooms (Oyster Mushrooms and Shimeiji Mushrooms) with Onions and French Butter, drizzled over Truffle Oil. The earthiness was dominant but surprisingly amalgamated well with the rest of the ingredients, particularly the French Butter... a magical ingredient that gelled every aspect together. Bet you'll fall in love with this dish if you like your Mushrooms well.

  6. Still the best pasta in town, in my opinion. Chef Hong always seem to get the balance of flavours just right.

  7. Don't understand why they keep changing names? Isn't it a better way of established a name like Amelia when they first operated in Armenian Street?
