Gusttimo and Baguni Korean Concept Store @ Sunshine Square, Bayan Lepas, Penang.

Both Gusttimo and Baguni are new tenants to the newly remodeled space at Sunshine Square, Bayan Lepas. The supermarket has recently refurbished its front entrance near Jalan Mayang Pasir, making space for the Korean-influenced dessert joint and Korean mart. Gusttimo specializes in offering Korean-inspired icy sweet treats like Bingsu and eye-pleasing Italian Gelato; while Baguni is a Korean Mart that supplies shoppers with unlimited Korean products. One corner of Baguni is dedicated to a small kitchen that offers simple Korean Noodle and Rice dishes. The space is clean and comfortable, most suitable for shoppers who wish to stretch their shopping legs and dive into a bowl of refreshingly cool Korean Bingsu. We have managed to try both on our visit- we were happy with the Bingsu but were greatly disappointed with the noodles served by Baguni (merely Korean Instant Noodles). Our recommendation- skip the Baguni Kitchen and proceed straight to Gusttimo for their Korean Bingsu.

Flower Gelato- Red Velvet and Chocolate (Rm 9.50)

Green Tea Bingsu (Rm 22)

Spicy Squid Ramyun (Rm 13)

Black Bean Paste Ramyun- Chapaghetti (Rm 13) + Sunny Side Up (Rm 2)

We were surprised to find that the Korean Rice dishes were completely sold out on our visit so we headed for the Black Bean Paste Ramyun and Spicy Squid Ramyun. Both were straight-forward.... Ramyun (a.k.a Korean Instant Noodles). The dishes could have been more sincere, no additional ingredients were added (not even some greens); topping up with a Sunny Side Up would cost an additional of Rm 2. Furthermore, the noodles were slightly overcooked to my liking (I believe I can do a better job in cooking Instant Noodles). It is a total rip-off for a price tag of Rm 13 for a bowl of Korean Instant Noodles.

Gusttimo on the other hand, offers good Korean Bingsu. We were most satisfied with the quality and serving portion of the Green Tea Bingsu we had. It was served with sprinkles of Green Tea Powder, 2 Green Tea Kit-Kat, some Walnuts, Red Beans and a scoop of Green Tea Ice Cream, served over Condensed Milk. The texture of the Bingsu was smooth and fine, even better than the famed chain Bingsu cafe- Caffe Bene. The Gelato was not shabby either, though the flavors were not mind-blowing, the sweetness was well-balanced. They were not saccharine sweet and possessed the quintessential gooey Gelato texture. We'd recommend their Red Velvet flavor.
