Kraffmen Cafe @ Zainul Abidin, Georgetown, Penang.

It's always a good sign when you can't decide what to order. It's a relatively common issue here at Kraffmen Cafe, where the breakfast/ brunch selection is a cut above the rest. Located along Jalan Zainul Abidin, off Macalister Road, the cafe is like an oasis in the middle of the town; offering some of the best Australian-influenced brunch items. The menu is somewhat exciting and unusual in a good way; it does take us a while to figure out what to order... probably likewise for the indecisive. The interior space is covered in shades of grey and white, seemingly a lofty space to chill. But the focus should be on the reliably good food, on par with some of the better cafes in town.

The St. Ali (Rm 21)

It's not wrong to say that Kraffmen is a designer cafe, all of the dishes were artfully presented. The St. Ali was probably our favorite dish of the day- Potato Rosti with Avocado Spread, Mushroom Duxelle, shaved Parmesan and topped with poached Egg. The winning factor was the concoction of Mushroom Duxelle and shaved Parmesan. The former one provided an addictive earthy flavor while the latter ingredient introduced a sleek savory, creamy-cheesiness to the dish. Another 'creamy' factor was the Avocado but with an acidic touch, it cuts through the greasy factor and offered another dimension of flavors. The Potato Rosti is not to be forsaken either. It was beautifully done- shredded Potato and pan fry with crisp edges while maintaining the juicy crunch within. The whole combination was astonishing.

Sourdough Toast with Pulled Duck (Rm 25)

Kraffmen's Baked Egg (Rm 25)

The Pulled Duck on Sourdough Toast was not shabby either- pulled Duck meat with crunchy edges served atop of home-made Sourdough and topped with poached Egg and Hollandaise sauce. The meat was a little too dry to our liking and the poached Egg was slightly overcooked. But the flavor-combo was impressive, the seasoning was spot on. We were also impressed with the creativity to include refreshing elements like Green Apples, Mint, Pomegranate and Red Radish.

Kraffmen's Baked Egg paled when in comparison with the rest, though the flavors were good and the Lamb steak was toothsome, the overcooked Baked Egg was a disappointment. It lacked of some juicy crunch either. Not too bad but can be better.

Cappuccino (Rm 11)

  3. The baked egg look greasy, I saw oil stain on the side of the pot but I like the idea of pairing with a whole piece of lamb steak .

  4. Menu looks very familiar. Pulled duck served in a sandwich and also in a crepe was made famous a long time ago at Chez Dre café in South Melbourne. Hardly original!
