Yang Jia North East Chinese Cuisine (杨家东北菜。湘菜) @ Pulau Tikus, Penang.

Yang Jia North East Chinese Cuisine at Pulau Tikus is a long-established Chinese restaurant in Penang. We've been passing the place for many times and have no clue about the seemingly curious restaurant could offer. The exterior is convincing but it does not give any idea on what types of food they are serving. Push the doors open and you will find the restaurant in standard Chinese setting but what surprised us was the bible-thick menu... that basically offers everything from appetizers, mains, hot pot, dumplings and sweet treats. Dong Bei, literally means North East... refers to the geographical region in China, simmering stews and dumplings are some of the local delicacies. Similarly, one could expect to see some of these Dong Bei-influenced dishes in Yang Jia North East Chinese Cuisine.

Spicy Grilled Fish (香辣烤鱼/ Rm 70)

Steamed Home-made Pork-Shrimp Dumplings (鲜猪肉虾仁饺子/ Rm 15)

Cucumber, Beancurd and Black Fungus Salad with Dressing (凉拌三丝/ Rm 10)

We started off with their Cucumber, Beancurd and Black Fungus Salad; a cold starter with a tinge of Chinese Black Vinegar and Chili Oil. It was spicy and acidic at the same time but it was cleverly balanced out. The acidic tinge cuts through the greasy Chili Oil and offers a refreshing crunch; even better with the addition of Coriander. The tummy-filler Pork-Shrimp Dumplings were alright; though we can taste the Shrimp, the dumpling skin was a tad too thick to our liking.

The signature Spicy Grilled Fish was more of a stew- Deep Fried Tilapia simmered in a Sze Chuan-influenced spicy broth with a hefty sum of crunchy greens, Beancurd Puffs and Potato Starch Noodles. There are 3 different levels of spiciness and we opted for the middle one. It was not too spicy by our definition but it definitely packed a flavorful punch. We thought the "ma" (numb) element was a little weak either. The serving portion is huge and therefore, recommended for at least 3 diners.
