The Bean Sprout Cafe @ Masjid Kapitan Keling, Georgetown, Penang.

Specializing in the classic brunch items- Big Breakfast, Toasts and Pancakes; The Bean Sprout Cafe is one of the latest members to join the clamoring cafe scene in Penang. It occupies one of the lots right opposite to the few century old Kuan Yin Temple along Masjid Kapitan Keling. Both exterior and interior are rustic, it certainly matches the heritage theme well. The contrast is obvious here- young and passionate in an old-fashioned space; east (building) meets west (food); the cafe operators seem to pay great attention to details here. The heat-intolerant might be glad to know that there's a huge blower erected (though not air-conditioned), the cafe is not stuffed and the ventilation works fine. We did not feel stuffy at all, on a sultry hot afternoon. Albeit the cafe has a small menu but sipping a cup of Joe and enjoying the Toast while looking at the bustling temple-praying scene can be one of the great ways to enjoy your off day.

Avocado Toast 3 Ways (Rm 18.50)

Classic Pancakes (Rm 10)

Don't roll with sweet breakfasts? Try their Avocado Toasts... a meal fit for a health conscious. It consists of 3 different types of toasts- Avocado-Cherry Tomatoes-Capsicum served on a toast spread with Avocado Mayonnaise (with Lemon Juice), Smoked Salmon and Scrambled Egg with Bacon... as well as a side of greens. We love the Avocado spread, the brilliantly used Lemon juice introduced a refreshing tang to the seemingly dull toast. The seasoning was spot on, none of the Toast was over-seasoned or under-seasoned. The Scrambled Egg was slightly overcooked but it did not matter, the portion was well-justified and commensurate with the price. The waiting time was unusually longer but the wait was worthwhile.

Those with a sweet tooth could go for their Classic Pancakes; a massive stack of Pancakes served with Honey and Butter. The Pancakes possessed the quintessential eggy-aroma but they may be a little too thin for us. Moreover, the Honey was disappointingly conventional, Maple Syrup or something fancier is preferred. Also, we thought that they could be more generous with the Butter. Maybe our expectations were high or merely their Avocado Toast outshined the Pancakes. We would prefer their Avocado Toasts over the Pancakes.
