Sigsa Korean Restaurant @ Straits Garden, Jelutong, Penang.

Korean food in the Jelutong neighborhood might be a scarce for the past but not now with the opening of a new Korean joint- Sigsa Korean Restaurant, housed under the new commercial building- Straits Garden. The Korean restaurant serves classic Korean staples such as Barbecues, Hotpots, Stews, Tteokbokki, Korean Noodles and Rice dishes. It has the standard Korean restaurant setting meant for barbecue (sans the good ventilation system), cleverly covered in wooden furnishing. We did not get to sample a lot of their dishes but from what we had, they were of standard-average quality... nothing more and nothing less than an average Korean restaurant; but prices are slightly higher than average.

Tteokbokki (Rm 20)

Gimbap (Rm 10)

Haemul Jeong/ Seafood Hotpot (Rm 70/ large)

For Rm 20, we'd expect the Tteokbokki to come with more ingredients such as Fish cakes and Hard Boiled Eggs. The aforementioned ingredients were present but we thought they were too little. The sauce carried the right amount of sweetness (as per Korean's definition, not the locals) and the Rice Cakes were delicately chewy. To fill the tummies, we had Gimbap to go with sweet-spicy Gochujang sauce. To our surprise, the Gimbap was delicious. The Seaweed was crisp and expertly brushed with Sesame Oil; though the filling was customary.

The real disappointment was Haemul Jeong, the Seafood Hotpot was supposedly filled with generous amount of Seafood and Shellfish but we only got a pathetic Flower Crab, some miserable Mussels and Clams, as well as some Octopus pieces. Not only the Seafood was a letdown, the broth was discouragingly salty. We were unfortunately, unable to drink the broth, in the fear of chronic kidney diseases.
