Hanamaru Sanuki Udon & Yoshinoya @ Sunway Carnival Mall, Seberang Jaya, Penang.

One of the famous international fast food chains- Hanamaru and Yoshinoya are finally here in Penang! (In case you didn't know, Yoshinoya is an established brand in Japan since 1899!) The Beef bowl chain Yoshinoya and Udon specialist Hanamaru have started their businesses in Sunway Carnival Mall while the outlets at Gurney Plaza will be opening real soon (basement of the mall). Both brands are known to offer low-priced but quality Udon and Beef bowl. Both brands are housed in the same place, though well separated into two different sections. The front part of the restaurant is given to Hanamaru... which adopts the self-service model while Yoshinoya runs on the usual fast food chain ordering method. Prices are standard-average but much cheaper than the country of origin- Japan.

Ontama Beef Bowl (Rm 13.80/ Regular) and Miso Soup (Rm 2.80)

The Beef Don we received was a little different as compared to the country of origin's. In Japan, raw Egg was used in lieu of soft-boiled Egg; probably due to hygiene issue but the effect was similar. The Beef slices were not as thick as expected and thus, the texture was affected but the marination was brilliant. The flavor of the sauce on the other hand, was thin. Also, the Rice was not cooked properly to the right texture. All in all, it was a disappointment that the standard was not even close to Japan's.

Ontama Bukkake (Rm 8.80/ Regular)

Zaru Udon (Rm 7.80/ Regular) and Karaage (Rm 3.80)

Zaru Udon is the perfect choice to combat the sultry warm weather in Penang. We love the chewy-resilient texture of the Sanuki Udon and they went perfectly with the savory-sweet Mentsuyu. Probably due to the warm weather, the Zaru Udon was not served as cold as I would have hoped. We were left underwhelmed for the absence of unlimited refills of Tempura Flakes, chopped Spring Onions and grated Ginger.

If cold dish is not your thing, go for their Ontama Bukkake, the Udon is doused with with a thick, sweet and savory Dashi stock and topped with a perfect soft-boiled Egg. We enjoyed ours with a sprinkle of the Shichimi Togarashi/ Japanese Seven-Flavored Powder. The flavors were amazing but if you must know, I'd prefer Zaru Udon. Over the self-service counter, diners may choose to add some Tempura items to their meal.
