Magstore Mini Supermarket @ Gurney Paragon Mall, Penang.

Originated from Hong Kong, Magstore is an upscale supermarket that carries many international brands, particularly tidbits and snacks from Japan and Korea. It is the perfect place for those with deep pockets to shop; fanciful flavors of Pretz, Pocky can also be found there but at a premium price tag. In Magstore (Gurney Paragon Mall), there are two sections worth exploring- Takoyaki/ Grilled Squid Corner and the Ice Cream Parlor. The setting is cramped with limited tables and chairs; one will find it difficult to maneuver around the area if full. On our visit, the place was packed to the brim; it was a complete chaos with no clear signage displayed. Visitors walked in and joined the queue not knowing that they were required to pay before queuing for the food. More like a grab and go place and not meant for hipsters to chill... good novelty experience nevertheless.

Yoobi Ice Cream Thyme (Rm 11.50)

Yoobi Ice Cream Sakura (Rm 11.50)

Their Soft Serve with quirky flavors certainly attracted a huge crowd and unfortunately, we had to join the relentless queue. There are 7 flavors available- Bitter, Sour, Sweet, Spicy, Salty, "Love" and "Question Mark" but most of the base flavors are fixed, what changes is the sprinkles of flavors. We had the mysterious flavor and it turned out to be Thyme but it was confusingly genial. The sweet Soft Serve has a milky flavor but it actually worked well with the spice- Thyme. In case you are wondering... those were crushed Cookies. The Sakura flavor, on the other hand, paled in comparison with Thyme. Though the flavor did not appear to be as playful but the Sakura flavor was subdued, as though we were having an ordinary Vanilla Soft Serve.

Korean Styled Grilled Squid (Rm 16.90/ promotion price now at Rm 12.90)

Takoyaki (Rm 9.90)

Over the grilling station, there are three types of snacks available- Takoyaki (from Japan), Grilled Squid (from Korea) and Eggettes (from Hong Kong). The waiting time was unbearable and they did not seem to manage the crowd effectively. We queued and waited for the Takoyaki but the staff did not calibrate and we had to queue again for the Grilled Squid (we waited for more than 20 minutes if you must know). Takoyaki was disappointingly average, probably our expectation was higher for that price tag. The skin was not as crisp as we have hoped and the flavor could be more playful; they were no different from those found in any other stalls. Grilled Squid has potential but the inexperienced staff over-sprinkled the Shichimi Togarashi powder (7 flavor- Chili powder) and the Squid was a tad too salty and hot for us but the texture was great, slightly resilient yet not too rough to the bite.
