The wait is over as one of the popular brands under The BIG Group has finally landed in Queensbay Mall Penang, occupying the now defunct Austin Chase shoplot on ground floor. The brand wishes to portray a younger vibe, clearly seen from the hanging light bulbs and exposed pipelines as well as the young and energetic service crew. Make your way until the end of the cafe and you will find an al-fresco dining area for those who prefer a more outdoorsy atmosphere, overlooking the bustling main street. Their extensively designed menu should have sufficient choices to please everyone, from appetizers, mains or even desserts. For those with a sweet tooth, make sure not to miss their range of luscious home-made cakes.
Nothing stands out from the menu- the usual cafe-fare. After comtemplating for some time, I decided to opt for Lamb Sausage and Tomato Linguine (Rm 25) which I was told that the Lamb Sausage was home-made by The BIG Group. The herb-packed Lamb Sausage possessed the right texture- firm and meaty; with the quintessential flavors; I could only wish for more.
The texture of Linguine was okay, I thought they could be more al-dente but they were not slouchy either. The Tomato sauce was reasonably seasoned, zingy and appetizing but I thought it lacked of a punch, probably better with a hint of spiciness. The Chef played a nice twist by adding a touch of Basil in the puree and a chock-full of fresh Coriander which added another layer of herbaceous aroma to the dish. The hearty dish would be ideal to be shared by a few friends as it gets quite toneless after a few bites.
Sweet course was Mango & Pomelo Cake (Rm 13), one of the less-sweet cakes recommended by the server. The texture was moist, velvety smooth with thin layer of sponge beautifully layered with fruity puree and bits of Pomelo Pulp as well as Sago. The cake was refreshingly light with a smoothen marriage between Pomelo and Mango. Neither one of them overpowered each other, everything was accurately calibrated to perfection, including sweetness. It might not be the case for those who prefer their cakes sweet. It was, however, perfectly okay for me.
