Fish Head Bee Hoon @ Hsin Chu Garden Food & Beverages (新竹园), Perak Road, Georgetown, Penang.

Talk about Fish Head Bee Hoon and many foodies will be fired up with this topic. I am aware that Penang has a fair share of decent Fish Head Bee Hoon but now, there is another and potentially better option for foodies to choose for. Situated at the ubiquitous food lane of Perak Road, Hsin Chu Garden Food & Beverages has gathered an appreciate following since its opening. The place is famous for its pick-your-own-ingredients Fish Head Bee Hoon; in other words, you may choose your preferred ingredients from the display counter and have them added onto your bowl of seafood goodies. Wallet-conscious diners will be glad to know that the price for a bowl of basic Fish Head Bee Hoon starts from Rm 4; as for those with deeper pockets could even order seafood like Crabs, Prawns, Grouper Fish slices or even Frogs. While we certainly enjoyed the food during our previous visit, the experience could be better with air-conditioners; also, finding a place to park might require some luck here.

Many thanks to Hsin Chu for extending the invitation.

If you would prefer something light and easy on the palate, go for their clear broth version. Using Fish Bones to boil (for hours) and extract the seafood essence of the fish, the broth carries a discernible seafood sweetness. There are also a few types of noodles for you to choose from, thick/thin Vermicelli Noodles (Bee Hoon), instant noodles as well as rice or porridge. The Grouper fish, on the other hand, was pleasingly delectable with its firm and meaty texture while the pristine white flesh suggested that the fish was fresh; same goes to other seafood too. If I had to nitpick, it would be the lack of Ginger and Coriander/ Parsley to give the bowl of Fish Head Bee Hoon a boost in aroma.

For those who prefers bold flavors, go for their Tom Yum version, the broth exudes a hot and spicy distinctive Tom Yum flavor with a fair sourish tinge, further heightened with the use of Lemon Grass and Kaffir Lime Leaves. However, it should be noted that their Tom Yum can be very hot and might not be too recommended for the spicy-intolerant.

A conglomeration of mock Abalone Slices, fresh Fish slices, noodles, Enoki Mushrooms and some Fish balls (RM 10.50 nett)
