Back Home (回家) @ Island Glades, Penang.

Island Glades has a fair share of decent eateries and food courts, but now there is a greater variety on offer- an unassuming healthy vegetarian cafe. Manned by a very young couple, Back Home (回家) is a place that offers comfortable environment with a few carefully crafted healthy vegetarian dishes. The whole concept of Back Home is very simple, to provide a reading corner for guests to read, but at the same time, promoting healthy lifestyle. The place has the perfect setting for friends to catch up, as well as to spend your weekend time to do some quick reading. I was quite excited to find out that they offer a few quirky vegetarian pasta dishes; I was not surprised that this little hidden gem is garnering an appreciate following for the few reasons: healthy, delicious, cozy ambiance, attentive service and wallet-friendly price tags. Back Home (回家) is located at Island Glades, right beside Pearl Cafe.

Their Organic Butterfly-Pea Spaghetti (Rm 12.90) would be perfect for the health-conscious in you. Cooked al-dente Spaghetti laying on a bed of fresh Greens and topped with their home-made sauce, completed with a slice of Lemon and a small cup of Butterfly-Pea Tea. The Tea does not aid in terms of flavor but it provides some health benefits according to the owner. The Tea is said to stimulates blood circulation and detoxifies the body (Laura, 2014.) The tantalizing concoction, on the other hand, has similar texture and taste as to Coleslaw, but it was blended with a copious amount of Carrots, Flex Seeds etc; beautifully made with remarkable depth of flavors. The additional tangy acidic tilt from the Lemon and the crunchy fresh greens give the salad a very refreshing taste, so light and easy on the palate. The generous serving portion was just good enough for one. It was ethereal, healthy and certainly guilt-free.

If you are someone who prefers bold flavors, you should go for their Olive Oil Basil Spaghetti (Rm 12.90), Spaghetti stir fried with Basil Leaves, Cherry Tomatoes and their home-made sauce, which consists of Organic Carrots, Kelp, and Soya Milk, of course, with a touch of Italian Herbs. No Garlic nor Meat was added, perfect for vegetarians. However, I thought the dish lacked of depth and I would certainly prefer a touch of Chili Flakes for the extra chili kick.

To end to meal, try their Energy Black Sesame Paste (Rm 5.90), served hot, the thick and rich dessert managed to wow me. It may seem deceptively simple and ordinary but believe me, the flavor was robust, with its velvety smooth texture, it just slides down the throat in a jiffy, leaving a very strong but delightful after-taste in the palate. It was not sweet, with a hint of natural bitterness from the toasted Sesame seeds. Yes, it was that good, recommended.
