Business Set Lunch @ Sesame + Soy, G Hotel, Penang.

Sesame + Soy, a modern and contemporary restaurant with a unique dual dining experiences. Situated at G-Hotel, an iconic location along Gurney Drive, the elegant and sophisticated restaurant is a stone throw away from the heart of Georgetown and many central business districts; Sesame + Soy Chinese Restaurant is one of the best eateries with the perfect ambiance to enjoy a cozy and relaxing business lunch with your business partners. Priced at Rm 38++ per person, available whole week long, diners are able to choose 2 dishes out of the 8 dishes available, with a bowl of soup of the day, a pot of warm Chinese Tea and dessert as well as your choice of White Rice OR Fried Rice. The meticulously designed menu for Business Set Lunch will be rotated on a weekly basis (full list of the menu will be provided at the bottom of this blog post).

Soup of the Day-- Chicken-Black Fungus Soup with Goji Berries and Pepper. The soup was flavorful but slightly too peppery to my liking. I thought the Black Fungus was slightly over-cooked as I would prefer mine to be slightly crunchier. It could be due to the time taken for the photography... nevertheless, it was a heart-warming starter served to us during a windy and rainy afternoon.

Diners are more than welcome to choose between their Special Fried Rice or White Rice. Their Fried Rice was fragrant and robust with flavors, with the more than sufficient "Wok-Hei", I reckon it should be a very good choice for Fried Rice lovers. Please note that there will be sliced Garlic and Egg added in their Fried Rice.

The first dish we get to sample was this Chicken Feet served with Papaya Kerabu. I am a huge fan of Kerabu but I don't seem to agree on their version of Kerabu, especially with the use of Pickled Papaya. I did not like the pungent flavor of the pickled Papaya, it would be ideal if they could use fresh raw Papaya instead, for the natural sourness and unique aroma. Kerabu-aside, the Chicken Feet were alright, perfectly deboned and crunchy to my liking.

Stewed Black Mushroom with Bean curd Stick and Assorted Vegetables comes next. The dish was well-executed with a generous amount of chopped Garlic and reasonably flavored to my liking. One should not miss the Bean-curd Stick as well, the chewiness of the Bean-curd Stick and the crunchiness of the corns were no doubt a rather unique texture.

We also get to sample this Crispy Fish Fillet topped with King Oyster Sauce. The name was rather misleading as the Fish Fillet were not crispy at all, in fact, they were topped with their King Oyster Sauce. I personally adore the lightly battered Fish. The Fish was fresh and smooth to my liking, however, the sauce was more to the salty side on its own. It should fare better with some rice.

The dish Lamb Cubes with Sze Chuan Sauce (comes with Onions, Carrots and Chilies) was a crowd pleaser. The perfectly cooked Lamb Cubes were tender and well-blended with the sauce. Together with the appetizing sauce, one can easily gobble the entire bowl of rice within few minutes!

The dish Sauteed Fan Scallop & Egg Plant with Fragrant Curry Leaves was average-okay in my opinion; although the Eggplant sauce was flavorful and I must admit it goes well with rice but I thought it will be inconvenient for me to shovel the scallops due to the shells. It will be great if they can replace Scallops with Prawns, Squids or even de-shelled Scallops ideally. Extra marks would have given if they were able to slice the Eggplants in a thicker manner as the Eggplant-cubes were too insignificant to be tasted.

Fried French Beans with Minced Chicken was delectable. I like the way Chef prepared the dish, simple yet palatable; although slightly oilier, the French Beans were perfectly cooked, maintaining the right crunchiness. The Minced Chicken Meat with Dried Shrimp were a good combination with the French Beans, with a hint of spiciness from the chopped Chilies.

The dish Fried Chicken with Onion and Brown Sauce hit the top notch of the day, the crisply fried Chicken was well coated with Onion and Brown Sauce. I reckon the subtle and flavorful Chicken should goes well with rice.

Deep Fried Bean curd with Cobo/ Gobo, Japanese name for a root vegetable. The Bean-curd was deep fried till perfection, along with some blanched vegetables, topped with their premium Soy sauce. The Soy sauce tasted somewhat similar to those steamed fish soy sauce. Both the Bean-curd and Soy sauce were okay but to my surprise, the flavor does not seem to blend in well enough. The Bean-curd and Vegetables were rather bland on its own, the Soy sauce might be too watery for the flavors to be fully absorbed. As for the Gobo, it does not possess any distinctive flavor/taste, more like a crispy cracker to me.

The complimentary Dessert of the day was rather a dismal, I was expecting some traditional Chinese Tong Shui or delicate Asian dessert but instead..... Honeydew Pudding with Strawberry Ice Cream were served. Not only does the combination sounds odd to me but the flavors do not seem to be complementing each other too. The Honeydew Pudding was averagely okay to me and Strawberry Ice Cream was..... Strawberry Ice Cream; nothing to shout over. It might be slightly better if they could serve us Vanilla Ice Cream that afternoon, after all, the milky Vanilla Ice Cream (with Honeydew Pudding) should stand a better chance over Strawberry Ice Cream. Some of their desserts include Chocolate Souffle and Creme Brulee with Gula Melaka.
