Restaurant Law Chang Kee (璋记饭店) @ Nibong Tebal, Penang.
I am not a regular patron at mainland areas (Butterworth, Bukit Mertajam, Seberang Perai etc), I rarely do review on eateries at mainland, mainly due to I am a retard to the routes. As for this time, I happened to pass by this place during our one-day trip to Parit Buntar/Taiping. Law Chang Kee is very famous among the locals, especially for their "Tu Bo Sweei" (Boiled Little Octopus) and "Chim Moey" (Crab Porridge). I can't help much in terms of directions as I was led by my local friend either (Yes, I am that bad when it comes to food hunting at mainland). I once had a lunch here with my family back in many years ago, it was an early afternoon and the place was very crowded. Do go there earlier to avoid disappointment and long waiting time. Price-wise, was very cheap, in fact, you can hardly get all these dishes at this price in Penang (referring to Penang Island), although ambiance might not be that ideal but their foods are definitely one of the best that you can ever find. Moreover, most of the ingredients used in their dishes were very fresh during our visit, I am looking forward to my next visit.
I strongly recommend their Chim Moay/ Crab Porridge, price varies which will be calculated by head counts, Rm12 per person. This portion was meant for three person which totaled up Rm 36, it was meant to feed for three person only, but the portion was so great and we were not that hungry actually, so it serves five of us well (we had some other dishes too). The crabs were bountifully given, yet, most of them came with roe, making the porridge much sweeter and more flavorful. The crab porridge comes with some Garden Chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum Coronarium/ 茼蒿) and topped with a generous amount of Parsley as well.
Tu Bo Sweei/ Boiled Baby Octopus (Rm 12 for large) is another must-try item in Law Chang Kee. This is a very simple dish by boiling some of their freshly caught baby octopus and topped with some deep fried garlic oil, complemented by their home made chili sauce topped with peanut powder. I was amazed by the crunchiness and freshness of those octopus, they were not over-cooked, just perfect to my liking. Recommended.
We had our Pea Shoots (豆苗) Stir Fried with their Sambal (Rm 8). To my surprise, the portion was actually pretty huge, it comes with some small shrimps as well. The overall dish was slightly over-flavored in my opinion, probably due to its saltiness within the sambal and it was not too spicy for me. I do adore this dish, mainly due to the crunchiness and the sweetness of the Pea Shoots were still there.
Stir Fried La-La with Tou Ban Jiang/ 豆瓣酱 costs us Rm 12. The succulent and juicy La-La was stir fried using Tou Ban Jiang and some of the chilies, with a touch of Chinese Rice Wine. Despite of its simplicity, the dish turned out to be decent (although more to the salty side in my opinion). The sauce worked perfectly with white rice, together with the fresh and flesh La-La. Not too shabby.
Again, Fried Egg with Bits of Pork (Rm 7) comes in a rather big portion. This delectable fried egg was fluffy and savory to some of us, but I find it a bit oily to my liking. It has some bits of minced pork meat incorporated into the egg as well.
