Kulim Forest Restaurant (森林海鲜村) @ Kulim, Kedah.

It's always fun to have a quick getaway from the bustling city center and get closer to nature; if you agree with this statement, then make sure Kulim Forest Restaurant on your to-visit-list. Deep in the heart of Kulim, Kulim Forest Restaurant is tucked away behind the residential of Kampung Padang Tembak; once you have turned into the residential area (full of one-storey terrace houses), follow the signage and you will find yourself at a place surrounded by serene neighborhood with a man-made pool in the middle. Every corner offers a good photo opportunity, the atmosphere is most relaxed and the surrounding is picturesque. There is no written menu at Kulim Forest Restaurant but the server will recommend the freshest catch of the day. Fresh water produce is commonly served here, with a range of familiar Chinese dishes... reasonable price points if you must know.

Thai-styled Red Snapper (Rm 35/ by weight)

Steamed Cat Fish (Rm 30/ by weight)

Thai-styled Steamed Flower Clams and Squid (Rm 30)

Stir Fried Qing Long Vegetables (Rm 12)

The server recommended Thai-styled Red Snapper with aplomb but we thought it was nothing out of the ordinary. It certainly reminded us of Kheng Som but sans the acidity; it was okay but did not quite leave us a deep impression. The steamed Cat Fish on the other hand, fared better than the Red Snapper. The premium Soy sauce was delicious but the fish could be fatter. It is always wise to check with the servers and request for those above 1 kg, especially the case for Cat Fish or Patin (with pockets of alluring fats). We love the gigantic Squid with Lime Juice but the Flower Clams were not as fresh as we would have hoped; but at least it was compensated with the satisfying, slight-resilient Squid and flavorful concoction (of Lime, Chilies and Garlic). The meal was complemented by the tranquility of the environment but the pesky flies outnumbered the guests. It was a nuisance that we had to keep waving our hands to keep the flies off the table.

  1. The only place where I had a meal in Kulim was at the club, near the Seri Malaysia Hotel.

  3. Red snapper looks good tho and sometimes a little less fatty is good for those who wants a "healthier" option

  4. Always love restaurant with such setting like with ponds or open space so that kids can have some "entertainments" or activities before the food served.
