Lao Jie Fang Coffee Terrace @ Gurney Drive, Georgetown, Penang.

Lao Jie Fang, a familiar brand name in the traditional confectioneries and native local products in Penang has ventured out of its usual business scope... opening a Coffee Shop (otherwise known as Kopitiam) at Sunrise Gurney, a new commercial building right next to Jalan Birch and Gurney Drive. It serves up some Malaysian/ Singaporean staples such as Kaya Butter Toast, Nyonya Kuih, Nasi Lemak etc. It certainly reminds us of establishments like Old Town and Papa Rich except that it offers slightly different variety as compared to the duo. Might be good place for a quick afternoon tea but the dishes were a tad too common with elusive quality for us.

Golden Curry Chicken with Crispy Toast (Rm 12.90)

Signature Egg Nest on Toast (Rm 7.80)

The server recommended us to try their signature Golden Curry Chicken with Crispy Toast but ironically, the Toast was not crispy at all; it was more of the soft-fluffy type in the middle with hard crust. But the Curry was alright and the Chicken was fork-tender.... still.... just an ordinary Curry Chicken with okay-average Toast.

Signature Egg Nest on Toast has the potential, especially on the gimmicky appearance; Eggs were served on a "nest" made of pastry skins and baked to the current shape. We expected the Yolk to flow out at the nudge of the fork but it did not happen. The Egg was overcooked and the texture (together with the Toast) was a tad too dry to our liking. The aroma was there but it certainly lacked the "X" factor.
