Yè Yàn Private Dining & Bar 夜宴 @ Abu Siti Lane, Georgetown, Penang.

The concept of Private Dining has been all the rage in Penang in recent months- the novelty experience and excitement waiting for the Chef to dish out their expertly crafted dishes. Yè Yàn Private Dining & Bar 夜宴 is one of the latest spots where you can enjoy your Private Dining experience in town. The menu is constantly changing and there is no fixed theme, the Chef brings out the best he could on the day (depending on the supply sources). There are 2 different types of pricing- the RM108 is a 3-course meal for walk-in diners whilst the RM128 is a 5-course menu with possible add-ons; the premium add-ons has a wide range and could cost up to RM688 (expect to see Iberico Steak, Wagyu Beef, Atlantic Cod etc), a minimum 3 days booking in advance is required. On top of the Private Dining menu, Yè Yàn offers a big Cocktail menu too.

Many Thanks to Yè Yàn for hosting us that evening.

[Main] Signature Seaweed Salmon

[Main] Australian Wagyu M5

[Starter] Pan Seared Scallop with Honey Caviar

[Starter] Smoked Salmon

[Salad] Tuna Tataki with White and Green Asparagus

[Soup] Tomato Soup with Saffron Tomato Consommé Jelly and Cheese Cracker

[Dessert] Home-made Apple Pie

The RM108 3-course meal would consist of a Starter, Soup and a Main (choice of Chicken, Seafood or Pork) whilst the 5-course meal would start from RM128 (Starter, Soup, Salad, Main and Dessert). The menu is on constant change. The dishes featured are based on what we had on that evening. For Starter, we had Pan Seared Scallop with Honey Caviar and Deconstructed Smoked Salmon. The former one was simple and straight-forward but the addition of Honey Caviar added an indelible sweetness to the dish. Like-wise for the Smoked Salmon on Rice Cracker. For Salad, we had Tuna Tataki with White and Green Asparagus; the seared Tuna Tataki was coated with baked Quinoa for the crackling-crisp texture, the Asparagus sauce had not done much in its aid but offered a way to assuage the guilt. The Soup we had was Tomato Soup with Saffron Tomato Consommé Jelly and Cheese Cracker, a thick and rich Tomato Soup with slight acidity; when consumed with the Cheese Cracker, it created another delightful dimension.

For Mains, the Signature Seaweed Salmon was very special- Salmon was seared and scorched on the outside leaving the interior uncooked; served with crispy Seaweed, Purple Carrot and Lemon Dill Cream. The Salmon was soft inside, creating a dual-layer texture. The Australian Wagyu M5 was a premium add-on with beautiful marbling. The quality of the meat was top-notch and little seasoning was necessary.

Roku Gin (Rm 38)

Pink Lady (Rm 38)

Orange Island (Rm 38)

Yè Yàn has quite a big Cocktail menu- amongst the best sellers are their signature Cocktails: Roku Gin, Pink Lady and Orange Island. The Roku Gin is concocted with the Japanese Gin, Orange Juice, Lemon Juice and a little Yuzu Syrup- strong Gin presence with a touch of refreshing citrusy flavor. Unlike Roku Gin, Pink Lady offers a sweeter base with Beefeater Gin, Watermelon Juice, Sour Plum Juice, Mint and Melted Rock Sugar. Watermelon and Sour Plum is a classic, timeless combo; the base is a little sweet with Gin presence, towards the end, melt the Rock Sugar into the concoction for another different layer of dimension (to make it sweeter like a dessert wine). Orange Island's base is not Gin but Whisky, with Orange Juice, Sugar Syrup, Apple Cider and bits of Rosemary. Another lovely concoction for those who prefer something light and citrusy.
