Sugar Tang 糖书阁 @ Carnavon Street, Georgetown, Penang.

A modern but minimalist space at Carnavon Street, Sugar Tang 糖书阁 is one of the latest additions to the clamoring Penang cafe scene. The place took social media by storm during its opening stage... every corner seems to be ideal for photography. While it does offer quite a variety of sweet treats (pastries and cakes), the main menu seems to be on the weaker side... with Japanese-inspired dishes like Sushi and Don; lacking of noodle choices or other lighter options. Not a bad place for casual meet ups but perhaps not so much for a proper meal.

Unagi Tama Don (Rm 22.90)

Miku Tamago (Rm 13.90)

Smoked Duck Wafu Dressing (Rm 17.90)

Salmon Mayo with Sesame Seeds and Spring Onion Sushi (Rm 11.90)

Serving portions are generally small at Sugar Tang so do make your own adjustments if you are a big eater. Start with the Smoked Duck Wafu Dressing... smoky Duck Breast served on a bed of greens with pickled Daikon and served with their Wafu Dressing... not a bad combination but the Wafu Dressing was something out of the ordinary Wafu Dressing... perhaps their own recipe but did not quite work for me. The Salmon Mayo Sushi was a disappointment... probably they were trying to be playful but the combination was somewhat odd. We also did not like the fact that the Sushi was drowned with Mayonnaise... over-killing the entire dish. Another side we had was Miku Tamago... deep Fried custardy Egg sandwiched by Miku (Chinese Steamed Turtle Bun); interesting texture but the Tamago flavor was weak... would be better if they could add in a milkier taste to it. The Unagi Tama Don was probably the only dish we could agree upon but the classic combo of Unagi with Japanese-styled Egg rice bowl was pretty much standard-average... well, at least we managed to get what we were paying for.
