Nothing beats a good bowl of shaved ice especially with the sultry hot tropical heat all year round. More options for those who wish to cool down with a icy cold treats as Kakiyuki has finally opening first branch in Penang. The brand originates from Kuala Lumpur and known for using all natural ingredients with no artificial flavoring in their making of Kakigori (Japanese-styled Shaved Ice). They have also been very creative to reinvent the wheel by introducing a series of new flavors and combination so expect no old-school, mundane flavor combo here. Having said that, certain ones are quite playful and may pose a challenge for those with lower acceptance level. It's also noteworthy that Kakiyuki does only offer Kakigori but the offering extends to include Japanese Wagashi as well.

We were introduced to Blue Dream Kakigori, a seemingly lighter choice and true enough, it carried an indelible acidity from Yuzu and a mild flowery fragrance. There were also bits of sugared gummies and Elderflower-jellies to add a little touch to the flavor and texture. Not exactly our favorite but if you would prefer something lighter on the palate or something that would not contribute to your guilt for having a dessert, this may be a decent choice. A bowl of Matcha-goodness, the Matcha Anmitsu is ideal for Matcha lovers. It has everything in a bowl- Matcha Ice Cream, Warabi Mochi, Anmitsu (jellies), Dango, a scoop of Anko as well as some fresh fruits. Refreshingly light on the palate but satisfyingly delicious. If your sugar acceptance level is high, try the Nama Daifuku... bold Matcha flavor but a tad too sweet to our liking; also, the Mochi texture could be better as well.
