Hon Kei Campbell Food Corner (汉记小食店) @ Campbell Street, Georgetown, Penang.

One of the oldest Chinese food joints in Penang- Hon Kei needs no further introduction; the brand is known for serving Pork Noodles and has a newly refurnished restaurant along Lorong Kampung Malabar but not many are aware about its sister restaurant- Hon Kei Campbell Food Corner (汉记小食店). Right behind the main restaurant, Hon Kei Campbell Food Corner is accessible from Campbell Street and offers a slightly different and smaller menu compared to the main branch. Expect to see some Cantonese stir-fry dishes here along with Spicy Soup Noodles and Curry Fish Head. The place is not necessarily more spacious but the fact that it is air-conditioned makes it a more comfortable dining space, especially for the heat-intolerant. Menu is not the only difference here, we noticed the prices are slightly more expensive, probably due to the air-conditioner factor.

Char Hor Fun 滑蛋河粉 (Rm10)

Claypot Assam Curry Fish Head 沙煲咖喱鱼头 (Rm 23/ small)

Bitter Gourd Fried Egg 苦瓜炒蛋 (Rm 10)

Hon Kei's Char Hor Fun resembles the flavors of the past, it carried the distinctive charred aroma and a generous amount of Pork Lards, served with beautifully cooked, luscious Egg gravy. Though Rm 10 may sound a hefty price tag for a plate of Char Hor Fun, 3 big Prawns and a good amount of Meat were seen.

We love the fact that they served the Claypot Assam Curry Fish Head piping hot, with a bountiful amount of Fish pieces (Garoupa) in firm and pristine flesh. The Curry on the other hand, carried an indelible sweetness which we were not quite fond of, we would prefer our Assam Curry with a tinge of sourness in lieu of sweet note. The portion was good enough for 2 diners and to balance the diet, we also had a serving of Bitter Gourd Fried Egg.... beautifully cooked at the edges for the delightful burnt aroma while the inner part remained silky smooth and juicy crunch.

  1. Looks good. Bitter gourd fried egg looks different from what I've been having here - here, it's omelette. Sure would love to try this different version, maybe I can cook that myself at home.

  3. This place is always crowded and popular. How did you capture the empty shop?
