Zhong Sheng Bowl Soup Hot Pot (一碗汤) @ Bayan Lepas, Penang.

The year end rainy season is surely an unexpected encounter; as temperature drops, the urge to have something comforting and tummy-warming gets stronger. One of the best ways to warm the body up is to enjoy a sumptuous Hot Pot. New kid on the block- Zhong Sheng Bowl Soup Hot Pot (一碗汤) housed in one of the shop houses opposite to Queensbay Mall; offers an array of Chinese healthy Hot Pots. The whole place is very "Chinese"... whether the interior decor (Chinese wooden tables, chairs and wallpapers... even the background music) to the menu or even the servers. It appears that the soup bases for the Hot Pots are carefully crafted to bring medicinal and invigorating effects to the body. The set package for the Hot Pot Soup is great value for the money but some of the additional ingredients may cost a little more; the soup variety here is rather unique and definitely worth a look.

Cordyceps Flower Pork Ribs Soup (虫草花排骨汤/ Rm 88)

Sze Chuan Spicy Chicken Claypot Rice (砂锅辣子鸡/ Rm 18)

We did not feel like having their signature Pig Stomach Chicken Soup so we opted for the Cordyceps Flower Pork Ribs Soup instead. The flavorful meat broth resembled shades of Singaporean Bak Kut Teh, especially with the Peppery taste. It stroke us with a pungent urine-like taste and later we found out that fresh Bamboo Shoots were added to the soup. Though not part of our eating culture, the sharp smell softened as we moved on and probably covered by the Peppery taste. The soup was overall quite delicious and it was most comforting to enjoy on a chilly evening. To fill up the tummy, we had a side order of the Sze Chuan Spicy Chicken Claypot Rice; a brilliant marriage between the Sze Chuan Spicy Chicken and local Claypot Rice. The combination worked, the Chicken bits were crisp and beautifully cooked (seasoned), with the sweet Soy sauce, the flavors were bold and complemented the nourishing soup perfectly.

Handmade Dumplings (手工水饺/ Rm 8)

Beancurd Sticks (炸腐竹/ Rm 5)

Fish Balls (西刀鱼丸/ Rm 10)

Enoki Mushrooms (金针菇/ Rm 5)

Dipping sauce (Rm 2 per pax)
