Tokyo Yakitori Old Slow Rock Cafe and Restaurant @ Penang Road, Georgetown, Penang.

Tokyo Yakitori is a new Japanese restaurant in town, sister restaurant to one of the oldest Japanese joints in Penang- Kirishima Japanese Restaurant (at Cititel Penang) but both are geographically near to each other. Though Tokyo Yakitori is just a few shops away from Kirishima, both are targeting different segments- Kirishima's offering is more superior in terms of ingredients and price points while Tokyo Yakitori is more wallet-friendly. Notwithstanding, Tokyo Yakitori still offers decent Japanese delights- from the standard Japanese appetizers to Yakitori (Japanese Skewers) to Sushi, Ramen and Bento Sets. In the evening, the place is turned into a restaurant cum bar that offers a vast selection of Japanese Sake to pair over their range of Skewers. Nevertheless, the place is still suitable for all age-range of diners and that includes both teetotalers and drinkers. Tokyo Yakitori can be found at the T-junction of Sri Bahari Road and Penang Road (next to Kheng Pin Cafe).

Salmon Sushi Mini Ramen Set (Rm 23)

Saba and Yakitori Set (Rm 24)

Tonkotsu Ramen (Rm 17)

Chicken Yakitori (Rm 5 per skewer)

We'd recommend ordering their Bento Sets, to maximize the value. The Salmon Sushi Mini Ramen Set consists of 4 pieces of Salmon Sushi, a California Roll, a Chawanmushi and a small bowl of Ramen. It gives the diner the opportunity to savor some of the best dishes in Japanese cuisine. The portion can be huge for some so do plan your orders accordingly. While we were contented with the portion, we thought the Salmon Sushi can be further fine-tuned. The Salmon was thinly sliced, too thin that the overall texture was affected (quality should not be compromised with the price).

Ramen lovers would be glad to know that a bowl of Tonkotsu Ramen is competitively priced at Rm 17. The broth was delicious and packed a flavorful punch but the Ramen noodles can be more al-dente; they were a little too soft to my liking. The portion was not as big as expected but we could give in for a mere Rm 17. The signature Chicken Yakitori is available in two versions- Salt or Yakitori sauce. My partner in crime prefers Yakitori sauce over Salt-grilled but I'd like to think otherwise; both were expertly done nevertheless.

  1. What happened to old slow rock? The music died? I know Kheng Pin Cafe and Cititel, familiar with this part of Penang.
