Ah Zhong Chicken Rice (Hainan F&B/ 亚忠海南鸡饭) @ Kampung Malabar, Georgetown, Penang.

Chicken Rice is one of the staples for Penangites and it can be found anywhere in the State but it is not easy to find one that offers variety- dishes that work alongside with roasted Chicken. Ah Zhong Chicken Rice at Kampung Malabar is one of the latest Chicken Rice specialists that offers these delicacies. Apart from the usual Chicken Rice, it offers Bean Sprouts Koay Teow, Porridge, Tom Yum and Cantonese stir-fry Noodles etc. We thought the place was decent and would be suitable if someone would like something else (then the ordinary Chicken Rice) for a change. Ah Zhong is good for the variety.

Bean Sprout Chicken with Koay Teow (Rm 7)

Mixed Platter Rice Set- Char Siew and Roasted Pork (Rm 6)

Grouper Porridge (Rm 9.50)

Braised Egg (Rm 1 each)

Budget-watchers would be glad to know that the Bean Sprout Chicken with Koay Teow Set is affordably priced at Rm 7 and consists of a generous portion of Dry Koay Teow coupled with blanched Chicken and Bean Sprouts. The set is huge and can be easily shared amongst two diners with small appetites. The texture of the Koay Teow can be smoother but the noodles were reasonably seasoned. The Chicken was tender but not as smooth as we would have hoped but the combination between the meaty Chicken, crunchy Sprouts and satisfying noodles worked; even better with the aid of their home-made Hainanese Chicken Rice Chili dip. Great value nevertheless.

The Grouper Porridge on the other hand, has got nothing to shout over. While the portion was big, the Grouper was miserable (scanty fish but plentiful of porridge). The fish carried a disappointing fish stench either and we wondered if it was as fresh as we would have hoped.

  1. Steamed chicken with kway teow. That's not a very familiar combination.

  3. I literally scrolled up again to check on the portion when I saw that price for the koay teow + chicken + bean sprouts! Only RM7 for that huge portion especially the chicken which a lone can cost more than RM7 at KL!
