5 Utara Thai Seafood Restaurant @ Jitra, Kedah.

There are quite a number of good Thai restaurants in the northern States of Malaysia and 5 Utara Thai Seafood is one of them. This is one of the Thai restaurants frequently visited by the students studying in Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM); there are two branches in Kedah, one in Alor Star while another one can be found in Jitra. 5 Utara Thai Seafood offers a substantial range of Thai food, especially with the Southern Thai influences. The setting of the place is casual and the prices are very reasonable (considering the generous portion). One of the decent places to stop by if you happened to travel up to North.

Keng Som Siakap (Rm 54)

Green Curry Chicken (Rm 20)

Thai Squid (Rm 20)

Seafood Kerabu (Rm 15)

Seafood Otak-Otak (Rm 20)

Cha Om (Rm 15)

Stir Fried Siamese Vermicelli Noodles (Rm 12/ for 2)

Noodle-lovers should try their Siamese Vermicelli Noodles, though heavily seasoned with Tomato Ketchup, the Vermicelli Noodles were beautifully cooked with a hint of spiciness with a sleek-comfortable sweetness. The portion was good enough for at least 3 even though we ordered for 2. The Thai Squid was another lovely dish, the flavors were amazing. It has everything 'South East Asian' in it- sweet, spicy, salty with a gentle creamy Santan-touch. To add some spice to the usual Deep Fried Fish, we had Keng Som, Thai Sour Curry soup with a blend of juicy crunch like Okra, Pineapple and Cucumber. The deep fried Siakap was nicely done- crisp on the edges with soft-tasty flesh, the acidic Keng Som cuts through the greasiness and introduced a delightful refreshing touch to it. The combination was refreshing but the fact that it was not really spicy left us underwhelmed. Other notable highlights include Green Curry Chicken, Seafood Kerabu, Seafood Otak-Otak and Cha Om (Thai Omelette with Thai-produced greens).

  1. The Siamese meehoon sound like Singapore fried meehoon with additional spicy element?
