Foong Yean Cantonese Restaurant (方源粤菜餐厅) @ Jalan Tengah, Bayan Lepas, Penang.

The main reason why regular patrons keep coming back to Foong Yean has got nothing to do with the dining atmosphere- though fully air-conditioned, the ventilation seems to be weak inside; they come back for the consistently delicious food, at unbeatable rates. The decade-old Cantonese Restaurant has quite a variety of dishes to offer- from the classic Cantonese stir fry to local-Malaysian cuisine; whether you are in a celebratory mood or just drop by over a casual meal, it has something for you. Foong Yean has always been the de-facto Chinese restaurant to visit in Bayan Lepas, especially for the Chinese investors/ management working in the organizations nearby the industrial zone. One of its most glamorous dishes includes the Indonesian Prawns... a dish that many sang their praises on. The experienced and well-trained staff is incredibly friendly, making it one of the most hospitable restaurants to visit in Bayan Lepas.

Indonesian Prawns 印尼虾 (Rm 49 for 7 Prawns)

Stir Fried Egg with Bitter Gourd 苦瓜夹蛋 (Rm 13/ medium)

Deep Fried Tofu served with Seafood gravy 金华豆腐 (Rm 16/ medium)

Three-Cup Chicken 三杯鸡 (Rm 16/ medium)

Stir Fried Greens 豌豆苗 (Rm 12/ medium)

The must order here is unmistakably the Indonesian Prawn served with a rich, subtle and creamy curry sauce that seems to work with anything! The curry was aromatic and the flavors were bold, the thickness was just perfect to cling on the fresh, juicy and plump Prawns. To my surprise, the Stir Fried Egg with Bittergourd was jaw-droppingly good. The thinly sliced Bittergourd barely registered any unpleasant bitterness but a juicy, refreshing bite; the Egg was expertly cooked with a flowy texture.... even better to go with their premium Soy sauce, it certainly reminds us of the Soft Boiled Egg with Soy sauce combo, with a creative touch. The remaining dishes were equally great and worked well with rice. For those who are not in favor of having rice, their Stir Fried (Singaporean) Bee Hoon is worth-trying too.

  1. I thought usually it is stir-fried bitter gourd with egg? Prawn is rather small for that kind of price.
