So Thaisty @ Bayan Baru, Penang.

So Thaisty started out as a Thai Tea parlour but recently, it has rolled out its food menu. Housed in a snug shop lot right to the Bayan Baru mosque (facing the Bayan Baru wet market), So Thaisty is known to serve thirst-quenching Thai Tea but its newly introduced food menu focuses on noodle-dishes. Noodle-lovers would be glad to know that no common Thai dishes such as Tom Yum or Kerabu but instead, some unconventional Thai-inspired noodle dishes. Though the menu is small, the flavors are big; the Chef pays great attention to small details as to the use of herbs and spices. Given the satisfying quality, we thought the dishes are competitively priced. It is also noteworthy that So Thaisty does catering as well, so it might be a decent option to cater for the Muslim crowd (manned by Muslim Chef and proprietor).

Pad Thai (Rm 8)

Thai Lemak Laksa (Rm 7)

Thai Boat Noodle (Rm 6)

Spicy Noodle with Soft Boiled Egg (Rm 7)

Both Thai Boat Noodle and Spicy Noodle with Soft Boiled Egg shared some similarities, the former choice comes with a flavorful meat broth while the latter option has a Soft-boiled Egg. Both noodle dishes were topped with a generous amount of Chicken meat and Chicken balls; both were equally great. The meat broth was flavorful with a tinge of sweetness and a sleek herbaceous flavor. To add a stronger Chili punch, we added some Chili flakes and their home-made vinegared Chili dip.

The Thai-elements are stronger in Pad Thai and Lemak Thai Laksa. The Pad Thai comes in a huge portion; the chewy Thai rice noodles were expertly cooked and well-seasoned with the quintessential flavors- salty, spicy with an indelible sweetness. It was good on its own but even better with some Lime juice squeezed over the noodles or with extra sprinkles of the crushed Peanuts. It was however, slightly too greasy to our liking. The Thai Lemak Laksa was unanimously voted as our favorite of the day. The noodles were soft but smooth while the fish broth was thick, creamy and meticulously seasoned. Just as we thought that the dimension of the dish might be a little flat, we were served with a basket of Ulam (traditional Malay salad) which, successfully brought an exciting change to the dish.

  2. Ytd did go try this, the Spicy Noodle with Soft Boiled Egg was superb salty and thai laksa portion is quite small, and using local bihun as substitute of thai laksa mee.
