Wawasan Cafe & Rest House (宏愿乡味之家-家乡走地鸡) @ Lebuh Sandilands, Georgetown, Penang.

A classic Zhu Char place that stays away from the commercially raised farm Chickens, Wawasan Cafe & Rest House at Lebuh Sandilands (a stone's throw distance away from Lebuh Cecil Wet Market) offers Village Free Range Chicken dishes. The Chickens are locally raised and sourced from the restaurateur's own farm in Perlis (reared in Perlis and delivered over to Penang). The humble Zhu Char place offers a menu dedicated to Chicken dishes, alongside with some Cantonese-inspired Stir Fry dishes. The setup is simple and straight-forward, a decent place for a quick, casual family meal.

Claypot Chicken/ 瓦煲鸡 (Rm 28/ small)

Steamed Kampung Free Range Chicken/ 白切甘榜鸡 (Rm 30/ half bird)

There are quite a few choices (of Chicken dishes) in Wawasan Cafe but since it was our first visit, we were recommended their Steamed Kampung Free Range Chicken... bountifully served with Shallot Oil and Coriander, ladled over premium Soy sauce. The meat was juicy, succulent sans the unpleasant grease. It was suggested that we enjoy the Steamed Chicken with their home-made Ginger-Spring Onion dip.

For those who prefer bolder flavors, go for their Claypot Chicken- Chicken pieces cooked with Shimeiji Mushrooms in a thick, rich sauce and topped with a generous amount of Spring Onions and Coriander. It was somewhat reminds us of the Taiwanese national dish- Three-Cup Chicken (三杯鸡) sans the Basil fragrance. It was veering towards the salty side on its own but perfectly balanced out when served with Rice. The meat proved to be chewier than those being steamed. We'd prefer the Steamed version if you must know. Other notable dishes include Deep Fried Pumpkin coated with Salted Egg Yolk, Claypot Sweet Potato Greens, Baked Kampung Free Range Chicken (advance reservation required for this dish) and Pig Stomach-Chicken with White Pepper Soup.
