Magazine Road's Char Bee Hoon @ Noordin Street, Georgetown, Penang.

With the surge in living costs, Malaysians become more cautious about their spending habits and if you are one of the budget watchers that grapple to make ends meet, this is the place for you... for a simple, hearty but satisfying  meal. It once ran its business at the narrow alley of Magazine Road (right beside Kimnovak/ 金露华)  and due to the urban development happening in the vicinity, it was forced to relocate. The new location is at Noordin Street, a stone's throw distance away from Cititel Express. Those in the know would be familiar about their Char Bee Hoon, Toh Tau Th'ng, Loh Bak and Prawn Fritters; at the present location, dining in is more comfortable than before.

Toh Tau Th'ng/ Sweet Peanut Soup (Rm 2)

Char Bee Hoon/ Stir Fried Vermicelli Noodles and Yellow Noodles (Rm 1.70)

Prawn Fritters (Rm 1.30 each)

A staple for the low-medium income earners, Char Bee Hoon is a common local treat here in Penang. For Rm 1.70, you get yourself a huge plate of Char Bee Hoon here, with a generous splash of their homemade tangy and well-spiced Sambal. Not the usual dry and "wok-hei" packed type of Char Bee Hoon but rather, a wet and soft texture. No, not soggy but not the al-dente texture either. For light nibble, we had their Prawn Fritters... crispy edges and soft inner texture, not particularly amazing though. We washed everything down with a serving of sweet Peanut Soup. Toh Tau Th'ng is one of the locals' favorites but theirs come with a bold Pandan aroma which in a way, too overwhelming and the fragrance of Peanuts was shadowed. It was however, delicately sweetened to our liking. Good option as a light sweet treat nevertheless.
