J'aime Le Cafe @ Centrio Avenue, Jalan Permai, Gelugor, Penang.

Unassuming is the best word to describe J'aime Le Cafe at Jalan Permai... it's tucked away at the residential area of Jalan Permai and there are chances you will drive past without noticing its presence if you are not paying attention. Small but cozy and cutely furnished with knick-knacks such as miniature Eiffel Tower, Coffee Bean Pot etc. There's even a couch for those who wish to chill at a more relaxed pace. The menu is well-thought of, though very likely designed to suit the local palates and for the residents staying in the vicinity. Some notable dishes are Curry Laksa Spaghetti, Squid Ink Aglio Olio but with unbeatable price tags. It may not have a very sturdy and attractive menu (to some), but if you wish to skip the traffic and beat the crowd, add J'aime Le Cafe to your cafe-hopping list. To find the cafe, drive from Jalan Yap Chor Ee until the junction to turn into Jalan Permai, go straight for another minute and J'aime Le Cafe is on your left (housed under the affordable housing project- Centrio Avenue.

Laksa Spaghetti (Rm 10.90)

Squid Ink Aglio Olio with Rosemary Chicken (Rm 12.90)

Pasta dishes are customary at cafes but J'aime Le Cafe makes an effort to play a twist on their Pasta dishes. Laksa Spaghetti is one of their signature dishes, not the Curry Laksa-inspired dish was delectable but it was unique. The flavors were well-balanced, with a noticeable chili-kick... further enhanced with the use of fresh Herbs like Kaffir Lime Leaves and Ginger Torch Flower. The flavors were enjoyable but a pity that the Pasta was slightly overcooked... not the al-dente texture that I would have hoped. The other toppings on the dish were Tofu Pok, Long Beans, Cuttlefish and Shrimps.

We could not refrain ourselves from ordering their Squid Ink Aglio Olio... at the price tag of Rm 12.90 but the temptation resulted in a disappointment. The Pasta was overcooked and the overall flavors did not stand out. The puckered Chicken was tender but the herbaceous flavor did not seem to be blend well with the Chicken. Also, we did not like the way they serve the Chicken. The meat was finely sliced but we'd prefer otherwise.... for a meatier and more satisfying bite.

For those who prefer to end the meal with a sweet note could go for their Chocolate Lave on Waffle (Rm 12.90); though the waiting time was excruciating (we waited for 45 minutes). It was a competitively priced dessert with Chocolate Lava and a scoop of Ice Cream atop of a thin but crusty Waffle, jeweled with condiments like fresh Strawberries and Marshmallows. The Chocolate Lava was slightly overcooked, though there was still a flow of Chocolate but we thought it could be better (as the texture was on the harder side for the edges). The Waffles were light but not as crispy as we would have hoped. It was a brilliant idea to have served Waffle with Chocolate Lava nevertheless.
