Home-cooked Nyonya Food by Pearly Kee

Pearly Kee, an author of a Nyonya Cook Book: "A Nyonya Inheritance" and a host of home cooking class at Tropical Spice Garden, is a very passionate lady and keen in sharing her knowledge and to promote Nyonya cuisine to her friends and guests from all over the world.
"Nyonya Food is dying as no one is passing down the "secrets" of cooking, many people remember how delicious the food is but not able to replicate the dishes in an authentic way"- Pearly Kee.
In hopes of the younger generation to be able to learn and to preserve the recipes, Pearly has decided to share all of her recipes collected for the past few decades to the public. She will be conducting cooking classes on a weekly basis, more information can be found here. It was my honor to be invited to a home-cooked dinner prepared by Pearly last week. Pearly will be having home-cooked Nyonya dinner on a monthly basis and the public is more than welcome to join the monthly event at the cost of Rm 50/ pax; more information on the menu can be found at her website. Pearly will be sharing her wonderful stories and reminiscing moments of her younger days to her guests. She even shared some of the table manners/ dining etiquette by the Nyonyas with us that evening.

Yellow House Sharing Cafe @ Relau, Penang.

When we were having our dinner at Hai Koay Teow Th’ng, we spotted this little café on 2nd floor or the building. It is very unusual to see a café opening on 2nd floor of the building in Penang and apparently, it is an office (Interior Design/ Art Gallery) cum café. The café owner Mr. Looi started his business few months ago, having a passion in coffee; he has decided to share with friends and clients about coffees. He gets so excited when his customers are interested in finding out more about his coffee. It might be a little hard to locate this café; it is situated at the same shop houses area as Hai Koay Teow Th’ng (opposite to PISA/SPICE or same row as Butter & Olive Bakery, Public Bank). Yellow House Café does not have much to offer but what they are providing is a place for gathering and meet up. They do serve some foods during weekends and Breakfast set on Sunday morning though.

Hai Koay Teow Th'ng (海粿条汤) @ Relau, Penang.

I was informed by my colleague about this little shop here, I have actually passed by for a few times but I just could not find a slot to give it a shot. Hai Koay Teow Th’ng is situated right opposite to PISA/SPICE (Penang International Sports Arena), on the way to Relau and Paya Terubong/ Balik Pulau route. There is a stretch of new shop houses sitting same row as Public Bank (opposite to PISA/SPICE) and you can find Hai Koay Teow Th’ng is one of them. From the banner, Hai Koay Teow Th’ng has opened its first outlet in Golden Lake Hawker Center in Relau and has moved into this air-conditioned shop since then. Apart from Koay Teow Th’ng, they do have some other side dishes worth of trying. Parking can be a problem during peak hours but do take note of their business hour as they will start their business at 3pm until 12am. It could be a very good place for a light supper though.

J.A.M Cafe @ Sungai Dua, Penang.

J.A.M café is a humble new café opened at Sungai Dua, the predecessor of the Café was Jeff & Wind Western Food. Operating in quite a similar way, J.A.M Café offers a wide variety of both Local and Western Cuisines to the diners, targeting primarily to the students in USM. One thing surprises me- their prices. It’s not quite easy to find such delicate dishes with such economical price elsewhere, even in Penang. Service might be a bit slow during peak hours due to lack of manpower but otherwise, their foods are worth the wait. I would not recommend all of their dishes but some of them did impress me. J.A.M. Café is facing the bustling road of Sungai Dua (Tesco Extra Sungai Dua, Penang), the place where the usual night market (on Saturday) will be held.

Moo Moo Milk Bar @ The One, Bayan Baru, Penang.

So there is this eatery named Moo Moo Milk Bar opened at The One, Bayan Baru not long ago. What amused me were their creative products offered. As the name suggested, Moo Moo Milk Bar offers some Mixed and Match drinks involving Milks/ Yogurts. They are very brave in the sense of offering some combinations that are beyond your imaginations. Let me give you an example, having Lemon/ Kiwi blended into your Yogurt Drink? More creative ideas can be found here. Moo Moo Milk Bar is just located at the same row as Blooms Restaurant; I had my quick and refreshing drink right after my meal before heading back to office. I was also told by the management that they will only use fresh fruits as the ingredients/flavors to be blended into the drinks.

Bordeaux Rendez-vous 2013 @ Eastern and Oriental (E&O) Hotel Penang.

April 30th marked another grand new milestone for Eastern and Oriental Hotel Penang for successfully hosting the first Bordeaux Rendez-vous in Penang (includes a master class for 26 labels of wines and wine reception with buffet dinner). It is not usual for them to have more than 20 labels of wines but they do have some wine pairing events from time to time (once every 5 to 6 months). The 150-people dinner was held at Eastern and Oriental Hotel’s (Penang) Macalister Ballroom, Level 5, Victory Annexe. Bordeaux Rendez-vous 2013 is said to be probably one of the most important Bordeaux wine events ever organized in South East Asia, where the event has been held in 4 countries and 5 cities (Singapore, Penang, Bangkok, Jakarta and Bali) in South East Asia since April 26th, 2013.
