Tong Pak Fu (糖百府) @ Burmah Road, Penang.

Located in the bustling heart of Georgetown, it shouldn't be too new for our fellow hardcore dessert fans in Penang as it has been quite some time since the opening of Tong Pak Fu, one of the famous Hong Kong dessert eateries. Tong Pak Fu in Penang offers most of the items offered in other places, they do have a wide array of desserts for dessert lovers to choose, from the tropical fruits like mangoes and durians, until the Asian traditional desserts like Sesame paste dessert and Red Bean soup etc. The service was a bit slow and not too efficient during my visit, parking might be a problem during peak hours. I'd say the price is slightly on the higher side but it would be worth if it satisfies your crave wouldn't it?

Creme Brulee (焦糖炖蛋, Rm 7.80) comes in a rather small portion, garnished with a halved strawberry. The Creme Brulee was flavorful and it has the perfect texture for me but unfortunately, it was too sweet to my liking. I was also told by the management that they were using the real Vanilla strip for the flavor instead of Vanilla extract, hence, some "dark/black" colored seeds can be seen when you are digging into the dessert. I'd say it was a decent choice but would be even better if the portion is bigger.

Their Chilled Mango Sago Creme With Pomelo and Mango Ice Cream (杨枝金露配芒果雪糕, Rm 10.80) was rather a disappointment. Firstly, the dessert comes with no Pomelo at all, Pomelo is one of the main ingredients or rather, the soul to this dessert. It would be a total failure without the extra touch of Pomelo. The management was clever enough to substitute the Pomelo with some of their home-made jelly for the texture but not the flavor sadly. I would call this the Chilled Mango Sago Creme With Pomelo instead. Next, the Mango Ice Cream was too small, no doubt it has a very strong Mango flavor to satisfy my cravings but it was indeed, too small for the value of money.

We also had their Black Sesame Snow Ice (芝麻秋香) for Rm 7.80 which comes in a huge portion, with some extra toppings of Pearls (Sago) and Nata De Coco. My first thought on this dessert was... bland, lack of flavor just like most shaved ice does, but apparently I was proven wrong. This Black Sesame Snow Ice was robust with the sesame flavor and the right sweetness to my liking. It would be too sweet if they were to cover with more syrup but fortunately they do not. My friends and I agreed that this was one of the best orders of the day.

One of their specials of the day was this Musang King Shaved Ice (毛山王榴莲秋香, Rm 13.80). This is definitely one of my most recommended dessert to durian lovers. The flavor was so strong until a single sip of these ice into your mouth can lasts for minutes. It has some extra touch of Corn Flakes, Pearls and Nata De Coco. Unfortunately, this dessert is said to be seasonal and depending on their availability. However, they do have other choices of durian shaved ice too, try to go earlier if you wish to savor this heavenly good durian dessert.

I find these Glutinous Rice Balls with Black Sesame and Peanut toppings (芝麻糖不甩, Rm 4.80) were just okay and nothing to shout over. One thing that they deserve the compliment was the Glutinous Rice Balls were served piping hot, which brings a soft but chewy texture, further complemented with the Sesame/Peanut balanced sugar toppings. The Glutinous Rice Balls are at their best while served hot, try to finish everything up as soon as possible.

  1. Wouldn't mind trying the ice cream, see good or not...but none of those Taiwanese desserts for me. Tried once, not something I would enjoy...thank you.
