Nyonya Curry Steamboat @ Sri Batik Nyonya Cafe, New World Park, Penang.

** This place has since ceased its operation.**

Steamboat ? Curry ? Bored of eating these two separately ? Now you can have all of them together at once ! Sri Batik Nyonya cafe is offering Nyonya Curry Steamboat for Rm88 which serves a good portion for four. I would also like to make a disclosure here, my visitation to this restaurant for their Nyonya Curry Steamboat dinner was using online vouchers bought on Groupon.com. Out of curiosity, I've decided to give it a shot on their creative invention, which was, to use Nyonya Assam Curry as steamboat soup base. The price is a bit expensive (if I were to pay Rm88) in my opinion and the service was not attentive enough, we were not given any bowls, there were only plates given to us, which I find it a bit inappropriate when eating steamboat. To find Sri Batik Nyona, find Old Town (Sri Batik Nyonya is right beside Old Town) at New World Park, or opposite to Kuchi, the Japanese restaurant in New World Park.

Nyonya Curry Seafood Steamboat Set for four (Rm88), the steamboat was served using a clay pot. The set consisted of fresh prawns, squids, scallops, salmon slices, Japanese tofu, Enoki mushrooms, ladies fingers, watercress, cabbage, Shitake mushrooms, button mushrooms, crab sticks, eggs and some Vermicelli noodles. The set was just enough for the three of us (we do have to order an extra bowl of white rice for Rm1.20), and I do not think that it fits four person. As for the soup base, it was way too sweet to my liking, I would prefer the soup with slightly heavier Assam flavor which carries a hint of sourness. The was very flavorful and possessed the "ohm" during my first sip, but I got bored after a few sips. As for the seafood, they were very fresh, particularly the squids, love their size and the springy texture. Salmon was slightly disappointing as there were some bones inside, I would prefer some boneless salmon. I do find the use of salmon was somehow inappropriate here too, as the aroma from the curry will eventually hide the unique flavor of salmon, it makes no difference if they were to use other ordinary fishes. The use of egg will be a weird combination with curry as well. Overall, I find this curry hot pot a very creative dish and will be more suitable for younger generations but it does not suit my taste buds personally. I find their price is expensive too (which is Rm88).

We do have this Pengat Pisang (Fruits, particularly Bananas being simmered in Coconut Milk) for Rm4. It comes with some potatoes, yam and the soul ingredient of Pengat- Bananas. This dessert was more to the sweeter side in my opinion, it could be much better if they could reduce the sweetness. Moreover, more Santan (Coconut Milk) should be given to complement the huge chunks of potatoes. As you can see from the picture, its very unprofessional to serve their customers with a bowl that full of unknown dirt around the bowl and I do hope they could improve on this.

  7. I've seen this place when I was in Penang but never dropped in to try. RM88 for 4 is cheap...with prawns and squids and is that salmon in the middle? I would prefer clear soup though...not curry and not tom yam either.

I had shabu-shabu here the other day - 3 of us...RM60 plus...and no prawns. All the things quite miserable. Now, that's expensive!

    1. this portion doesn't fit for 4 person, in fact, 3 of us find it okay only and my mom is not a big eater too, so i doubt it fits for 4 person
