KhunThai (坤泰) @ Teluk Kumbar, Penang.

If you are a hardcore fan of Thai cuisine/Thai food, you should have at least heard of the name, Khun Thai. Khun Thai has opened its very first restaurant at mainland (Butterworth) many years ago, and recently, in fact, few months ago, they have opened another new branch at Teluk Kumbar, Penang. Located at far north of Bayan Lepas is where Teluk Kumbar situated. Going Khun Thai should not be too hard, in fact, from Penang International Airport, go straight up for around 5mins, or until you see a sign board, directing you the direction where Khun Thai is located, follow the sign board and it should be fine. You do not have to worry about the sign board, as they are huge enough for you to find them. Price-wise, I find it reasonable as they do not have any service charge nor government tax. As for the service, it might be a bit chaotic if there is high traffic of customers at the restaurant, particularly during weekends. Expect some mosquitoes and flying ants around the area as the place is more to the 'kampung" style and its surrounded by grass. Sea-view from the restaurant is possible if you are sitting near to the beach side. They do have a lot of fresh live seafood, do tell them what you are looking for and quote the price first before ordering. Ample parking space is available right in front of the restaurant.

Its not even a Thai cuisine/meal without the ordering Tom Yam, we had this Mixed Seafood Tom Yam (传统东炎海鲜, Large) for Rm 34. It comes with some fish slices, prawns, squid and some chopped parsley/coriander. The soup was, in fact, very sour to my liking. Spiciness was still acceptable but some find it a bit spicy. Not too shabby after all. The portion was good enough to divide into nine smaller bowls.

Steamed Lala Lemon (酸柑蒸拉拉, Rm19.80). It follows the market price of 1kg for Rm33, depending how many person are there. The sourish garlic sauce was very appetizing indeed, it has complemented the Lala (clams) well enough, I love to bite the sliced garlic too. The Lala was indeed very fresh and the best part was, they do not have the sands contained within the shells. However, I would personally prefer to have the steamed squid/sotong with the same sauce instead.

We were unlucky that day, we were told that the steamed sotong/squid was not available, instead, we chose to order this Deep Fried Calamari for Rm16 (酥炸花枝,Large) instead. The Calamari was a bit too oily to my favor, but the sauce does complemented well with them. In fact, it was a bit bland if you are eating the fried Calamari without dipping into the sauce.

We were recommended to try this dish out since most of the tables out there have at least ordered this dish, Deep Fried Thai Tofu (泰式炸豆腐,Large, Rm 8). The tofu were deep fried till perfection, crispy on the outside and still remain the fluffiness on the inside of the tofu. The soul to this dish was the home-made Thai sweet chili sauce, with some chopped onions, cucumbers, and tonnes of peanuts added. Not too bad as an appetizer I guess.

Apart from those meat and seafood, we had this Three-Types Vegetables for Rm 13 (三味菜, Large). The dish was a bit bland and lacked of a pinch of salt in my opinion but the vegetables were nicely cooked, still very crunchy and juicy. I had previously tried their Stir Fried Sambal With Petai, I found that dish was better than this, at least in terms of taste and flavor.

Green Curry Chicken (泰式青咖哩,Rm20 for Large) was voted as one of the best dishes by some of us, the rich and creamy Green Curry goes well with white rice, there were some eggplant being soaked inside the curry too. However, the chicken meat was a bit rough in texture in my opinion but it was still good nonetheless.

Cha Om Omellete (泰蔬菜蛋,Rm 9) was another hit among some of us but I find it too oily to my liking. As for the taste, it was perfectly okay, in fact, the egg was fried till perfection and possessed a very aromatic fragrant. The portion was pretty big and its a good value of money indeed.
