Goh Teo Kee Restaurant @ Sungai Ara, Penang.

Finding a Teo Chew Chinese Restaurant in Penang can be a really troublesome, especially when you are not familiar with Penang, Goh Teo Kee Restaurant is one of the famous restaurants in Penang that serves Teo Chew chinese food. There are actually two branches in total, which located at Taman Sri Nibong and Sungai Ara, and my main focus today will be the outlet at Sungai Ara. Aside from Teo Chew cuisine, the branch in Sungai Ara serves Thai food too, which you can't find in Taman Sri Nibong's branch. Finding this restaurant should not be too hard if you are familiar with the area, from Relau (PISA), drive approximately 3 minutes, pay attention to your left hand side, upon reaching a Malay school, you will notice a junction (on your left), turn left and turn left again, drive for another thirty seconds, you should be able to see Goh Teo Kee on your right hand side. Parking can be easy, ample parking spaces around the area, there are also some parking lots right in front of Goh Teo Kee for customers too. This place can be very crowded especially during weekends, do try to make reservation first to avoid disappointment. Prices are on the higher side, there will be 10% of service charge and peanuts/facial towel charges added to your bill too.

Shunka (旬香) Japanese And Fusion Food @ 1st Avenue Mall, Penang.

If you have patronized around 1st Avenue Mall recently, you would have noticed there is a newly opened stall located on 8th floor (beside Red Box), serving Japanese food- Oden. Normal Oden (おでん, 关东煮) actually consists of several ingredients which being cooked and soaked in Dashi stock and can be easily found at any where beside the road in Japan. It is very common in places like Taiwan as well. There are a lot of choices available too, which the choices are not only limited to Oden, but more to Japanese food, they do have some Ramen/Udon and some Japanese delicacies as well such as fried food and some Japanese beverages. Prices are on the higher side (be aware that there will be a 5% service charge adding to your bill), but its definitely a place for you to sit down and have some snacks.

Sushi Tei (すし亭) @ Gurney Plaza, Penang.

If you are a hardcore Japanese food fan or enthusiast, you might have heard of this restaurant-- Sushi Tei before, Sushi Tei is a franchised Japanese restaurant which first set foot in Penang's Gurney Plaza (2nd floor of Gurney Plaza), it has well-known reputation for serving fresh and delectable sashimi. Opened not long ago, the outlet at Gurney Plaza has been flooded with patrons every time I passed by, the long queue waiting outside the restaurant caught my attention, so does the sophisticated and beautifully designed exterior. Reservation for table is strongly recommended, especially during public holidays and weekends, just to avoid disappointment. Service was pretty good, the waiters and waitresses were very friendly to us even though they were very busy (it was Valentine's Day, but I do see that they have messed up some orders too), price-wise, it was slightly on the pricier side, but definitely worth of trying especially when you are a big fan of sushi and sashimi, they have a lot of combinations and those rarely seen sashimi available too. However, there will be a 10% service charge added to your bill.

Tea-Tac-Toe @ Sungai Dua, Penang.

If you are finding a place to chill out or spend some quality time with your love ones, but holding on a rather tight budget, you might want to try this cafe out. Tea-Tac-Toe cafe has a very good and cozy ambiance, it feels like you are staying at home due to the homely decorations, not only as such, they do have comfortable couch/sofa too, as well as some card games/monopoly/mind trick games etc. The only draw back was there are only drinks available in this cafe, although there are some chocolates available but there are no other filling stuff. Anyway, the main idea here was to provide customers with a cozy place to spend some precious time with friends and family. As for drinks, they are serving inexpensive Taiwanese Bubble Tea, which comes in a lot of choices and toppings. The place itself is also a book shop for comics, one can buy magazines and comics here too. WiFi and TV games (Nintendo Wii) are also available, while WiFi is free all Tea-Tac-Toe's customers but you will have to pay if you wish to play the Nintendo Wii. They have three outlets in total, for more information on other outlets, please check on their facebook page, link will be provided below, in the additional information column.

Wong Kok Char Chan Teng (旺角茶餐厅) @ Gurney Paragon Mall, Penang.

You might be puzzled by the name- Wong Kok at Gurney Paragon Mall, wondering whether its another branch from the Mong Kok restaurants found in Queensbay Mall, Gurney Plaza, and even Prangin Mall. No, this Wong Kok Char Chan Teng is definitely FIRST in Penang, its actually pretty common in Kuala Lumpur or even Singapore. Wong Kok Char Chan Teng obviously is serving Hong Kong style food, "To taste Hong Kong, taste in Wong Kok", that is what they are sharing on their official web page. Authentic or not, you have to judge it yourself. Wong Kok Char Chan Teng is situated on first floor of Gurney Paragon, use the escalator right behind Pacafic Coffee Company, turn left after you have reached on first floor, there should be some guides along the road as well, its located at one of the corner units on first floor (exactly on top of Meet Fresh and Goku Raku Ramen). Service was very good, mainly due to there were quite a lot of waiters and waitresses around, they are having their opening promotion too, one can apply for their member card for FREE during this period, while stock lasts (terms and conditions applied). Price-wise, was okay, considering the huge portion served, but unfortunately, there will be 10% service charge added to your bill.

Meet Fresh @ Gurney Paragon Mall, Penang.

This is probably Ken's 6th post on Taiwanese Dessert. Meet Fresh is actually a chain dessert outlet that offers Taiwanese Dessert, it has set foot in Penang not long ago at the newly opened Gurney Paragon Mall, apart from that, they have opened another new branch shortly after that, which is their second outlet in Penang which is based in Gurney Plaza, Penang (Opposite Third Floor, Kim Gary if you are interested). If you had formerly followed my blog post on Taiwanese Dessert, you have probably known that one of the main ingredients used in Taiwanese Dessert will be Taro Balls. Similarly to other Taiwanese Dessert outlets, most of the offered items are more or less the same, one of the more-special topping was definitely their Glutinous Cake. Price-wise, was considered to be very cheap since the portion served was pretty big, the place was very cozy and has a good ambiance too.

888 Hokkien Mee @ Bayan Baru, Penang.

Ever since the triumphant of the contest- "Battle Of The Chef" (Hokkien Mee Category) organized by Penang Times Square, 888 Hokkien Mee has gained fame and became well-known of its exquisite, thick and flavorful Hokkien Mee (Prawn-soup Noodles). Its a branch from the famous one at Lebuh Presgrave too. It should not be too hard to locate this place, walk along Jalan Mahsuri at Bayan Baru, Penang until you see Sunshine Square Shopping Mall on your right and there should be a traffic light right in front of you, DO NOT turn, walk straight (pass the traffic light), pay attention to your left hand side shortly, it should be some where nearby (its a terrace house). Please not that there are no parking space, you will have to leave your car right beside the road. No worries, there will be plenty of cars parking beside the road especially during dinner/supper hours, the place can be easily spotted. Price-wise, its rather reasonable. They operate until late night (12am), making it a perfect place for supper. Do try it out folks !

All About Sugar And Gift (团圆汤圆甜品屋) @ Lorong Susu, Penang.

Glutinous Rice Balls (Tang Yuan) represents reunion, having glutinous rice balls during festive season really meant a lot, particularly to Chinese. Its a must-eat dish during one of the most important day- Winter Solstice too. All About Sugar And Gift specializes in offering glutinous rice ball desserts, they have really a lot to offer, especially when it comes to the flavors of sugar syrup. Aside from glutinous rice ball, they do offer some main course dishes offering as well. Prices are reasonable. Situated at Lorong Susu, parking can be a problem, especially during peak hour. Service was slow either, mainly due to one person working. Ambiance-wise, was very good on the other hand, as if I have walked into the past, back to the Ming/Qing Dynasty. All About Sugar And Gift was previously visited by Taiwan Celebrity Chef- Chen Hong as well.

Table Twenty Three @ Irrawaddy Road, Penang.

I am pretty sure that a lot have heard of this restaurant before, especially from those online deal/voucher companies, which they have successfully sold more than five thousands of vouchers. Table Twenty Three, a restaurant that serves western food which located at Irrawaddy Road, just a few houses away from Harvest Inn. The ambiance was pretty good but parking can be a problem (very usual for that place). Service was extremely slow (took them one hour to serve us our food), mainly due to one person working (as waiter) only. I was trying to call them for reservation, but no one picks up the phone call and I was told that they do answer the phone calls during their business hour only. Choices are limited for western food, but they do have a few choices named under the "Japanese Corner" too, finger food and snacks are available either as well as alcoholic drinks. During my visit, there were some promotional set dinner offered too. Do note that there will be 5% service charge added to your bill.
